The document is a crash course on dramatic structure and the perception shift, which is when the audience's understanding of something shifts from the surface meaning to the actual meaning. It uses the song "Wendy" by Kanye West as an example, where the audience initially thinks Wendy is a person but comes to realize Wendy refers to the city of Chicago. This perception shift reveals deeper insights about the themes and emotions underlying what is being portrayed.

This document discusses drug therapy for heart failure. It begins by defining heart failure and describing the stages and phenotypes. The main causes of heart failure are then outlined, including ischemic heart disease, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, infections, toxins, and valvular disease. The document discusses the pathophysiology of heart failure in terms of ventricular dysfunction, compensatory mechanisms like the Frank-Starling mechanism and neurohormonal activation, and the determinants of ventricular function. General treatment measures and pharmacological management are described for different stages of heart failure.
This document discusses corticosteroids, which are adrenal cortical hormones classified as glucocorticoids or mineralocorticoids. Glucocorticoids like prednisone have anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant effects by suppressing cytokines and immune cells. They are used to treat conditions like adrenal insufficiency, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, allergic reactions, and certain infections. However, long term use can cause adverse effects like Cushing's syndrome, diabetes, osteoporosis, and suppression of the HPA axis.
This document provides an overview of artistic goals in dramatic structure. It defines the artistic goal as what the author wants to accomplish, as opposed to explicitly stating themes. Good authors convey themes indirectly so the audience draws their own conclusions. Themes should be complete sentences describing an intangible concept from a certain perspective. Examples of artistic goals that produce a perception shift in the audience by the end of a work are given, such as realizing that all drugs are devastating from Requiem for a Dream or that being a good leader means knowing when to stop fighting from Hero.
This document provides an overview of onstage manifestations in dramatic structure. It uses the example of Kid Rock's song "Cowboy" to illustrate how the artist specifically defines what being a cowboy means to him through actions described in the lyrics. These tangible depictions of goals allow audiences to understand when a character achieves what they want. The document instructs students to think of nouns that symbolize emotions, concepts, or states when defining onstage manifestations for their characters.
This document provides an overview of dramatic questions in 5 modules. It explains that the dramatic question is the question the audience asks itself throughout the story. It starts with defining the desired outcome or "artistic goal", then works backwards to establish questions around that goal. For example, if the goal is "Garret gets an A", the dramatic questions become "Who gets an A?" and "What grade does Garret get?". The instructor recommends starting with the question implying others may achieve the goal but the main character cannot, to create dramatic tension as the story unfolds. Students are assigned to post examples on the discussion board.
This document provides a crash course on dramatic structure through 5 modules: Character, Onstage Manifestation, Dramatic Question, Artistic Goal, and Perception Shift. It uses examples like the story of the Starbelly Sneetches and a football game to illustrate concepts like character goals, conflicts that arise when goals are at odds, and resolution. A key point is that characters don't actually change, but our perception of them may shift through their journey.
The document discusses the history and role of the director in theater. It traces the evolution of the director from the Greek didaskalos or teacher, to the modern director like George II, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen in the 19th century, who is credited as the first modern director for his use of long rehearsals, attention to detail, and advocacy for historical accuracy that influenced Stanislavsky. The document also outlines the various responsibilities of the director, such as script analysis, structural analysis, production concept, casting, blocking during rehearsals, and synthesizing the work of other artists into a unified theatrical production.
This document discusses the art of acting and the training involved. It covers training for the body, voice, and mind. Techniques from Konstantin Stanislavsky and Tadashi Suzuki are discussed. Acting techniques like changing feelings, empathy, and substitution are explained. Understanding a character involves their circumstances, problems, hopes, and motivation. The document also covers aspects of an actor's life like auditions, rehearsals, and performances. It concludes with quotes about acting from Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep.
The document discusses descriptive review, a process where teachers examine student work together to improve quality and engagement. Key aspects include:
1) Teachers analyze student work without context to discuss what they see objectively and raise questions.
2) They speculate on evidence of student engagement and commitment, and whether work shows strategic compliance, ritual compliance, or retreatism.
3) The presenting teacher then provides context and responds to questions, and the group discusses implications to strengthen design qualities and increase student interest in future assignments.
4) The goal is to produce compelling work that engages students and gives them a sense of accomplishment.
This document provides an overview of the history and genres of the American musical theater. It discusses musical theater as the indigenous art form of America. The document outlines the various genres that contributed to the development of the modern musical like opera, operetta, vaudeville and more. It profiles influential composers like Stephen Sondheim and presents some of the milestone musicals from the past century. In the end, it acknowledges ongoing debates around the current state and future of the American musical.
This document discusses the role of designers in theatre productions. It explains that designers must research locations, time periods, and characters to transform the written page into visual elements on stage. Designers consider elements like line, dimension and balance to fill the empty performance space. They create sets, lighting, costumes, props, sounds, and makeup to reflect the play and characters. Design team meetings are held to define a central vision and address practical concerns like budgets and stage limitations. Though unseen, designers' work brings the production to life and deserves recognition.
Theatre and screen entertainment differ in key ways. Theatre involves a live audience that actively participates, while screen audiences are more passive. Acting on stage requires memorization and consistency between performances, while film allows for retakes. Directors of theatre work collaboratively, while film directors exert control over every shot. Theatre is funded through ticket sales and government grants, while screen entertainment relies more on advertising dollars.
The document outlines Goethe's formula for analyzing plays and artworks. The formula consists of 3 questions: 1) What is the artist trying to do? 2) How well has the artist done it? 3) Is the work worth doing? It provides examples of applying the formula to analyze posters about women's roles during World War I, examining the message and effectiveness of each poster. The document argues that Goethe's formula helps move analysis beyond just personal opinions and instead focuses on objectively observing and understanding the artwork.
The document discusses the definitions of art and theatre. It defines art as a skill, act of beauty, and human expression that selectively recreates reality. Theatre is defined as a "seeing place" where a performance takes place. Drama tells stories about people in conflict. Both theatre and drama are live, about human beings, and collaborative art forms. Common categories of theatre discussed include commercial, historical, political, experimental, and cultural theatre. The document contrasts how art challenges audiences and examines life critically, while entertainment aims to gratify and indulge without intellectual demands.
This document provides an overview of many types of theatre, including comedy, tragedy, and absurdism. It discusses various forms of comedy like high comedy, low comedy, farce, domestic comedies, and comedies of manners. It also covers tragedy and the concept of the tragic hero. Additionally, it summarizes forms of theatre like expressionism, epic theatre developed by Brecht, and the theatre of the absurd developed by playwrights like Beckett and Ionesco. Finally, it briefly touches on other theatrical traditions from around the world such as Sanskrit drama, Peking opera, Japanese theatre, Islamic shadow theatre, and more.

Creativity requires years of hard work and practice in order to develop techniques and talents. While natural abilities are influenced by many factors, true creativity emerges through diligent training of at least 10,000 hours, as well as maintaining an open and curious mindset. Problems are best solved through breaking them into components, brainstorming multiple solutions, and testing ideas through patience and failure.
Playwrights are referred to as the "primary artist" as they conceive the theme, characters, dialogue, and story of a play. The root of the word playwright comes from the Middle Ages and means "one who builds" plays, similar to how a shipwright builds ships. Plays follow various conventions like having themes, characters in action and conflict as a catalyst. Playwrights must skillfully use dialogue, stage directions, and other elements of language to craft their story and explore their chosen genre. While the process of writing a play can be difficult, playwrights find satisfaction in communicating their ideas in this unique artistic form.
The document provides a summary of a day in the life of a theatre. It describes the various roles that make up a theatre ensemble and what they do throughout the day. In the morning, artistic and production meetings take place to plan creative vision and finances. Rehearsals begin in the morning with the stage manager assisting the director. Costume construction happens at noon. The afternoon involves design work from musical directors, choreographers, and others. Evening activities include actors arriving for the show, an audience filling the house, and stagehands running the production. The day concludes with a performance and rolling out the ghost light overnight.

Chapter 4: Experiencing and Analyzing Playsgarrets
油
This document discusses how theatre artists manipulate audiences through group dynamics, suspension of disbelief, and aesthetic distance. It also covers levels of participation in theatre, etiquette, going to see plays, criticism, freedom of speech exceptions, and censorship throughout history. The key elements that theatre criticism should address according to Goethe are what the artist is trying to do, how well they did it, and if it is worth doing.
Theatre can reflect and promote cultural diversity in several ways. Theatre of identity promotes a particular culture's traditions and point of view to both cultural insiders and outsiders. Examples include Yiddish theatre in New York and plays chronicling the African American experience. Theatre of protest objects to dominant cultures and demands that minority voices be heard. Cross-cultural theatre mixes cultures to find understanding, like plays adapting Native American perspectives. Keeping diverse theatres alive ensures healthy cultural debate in a society.

She likes to blow
trees
She is tougher than his
friends
She is walked all-over
by former boyfriends
She has seen a lot of
