Background • The New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition is a shared commitment to achieve sustained inclusive, agriculture-led growth in Africa. • Launched in 2012, the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition set out to: Reaffirm continued donor commitment to reducing poverty and hunger Accelerate implementation of key components of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Leverage the potential of responsible private investment to support development goals Help lift 50 million people out of poverty in Africa by 2022 Achieve sustained inclusive, agriculture-led growth in Africa

How does New Alliance work? • Countries commit to undertake policy reforms and investments to facilitate responsible private investment in agriculture in support of smallholder farmers • The commitments are contained in Cooperation Framework signed by different partners: private sector, governments and donors • Partners agree to hold themselves accountable to these commitments, reporting annually on progress. • New Alliance commitments are reviewed as part of the CAADP Agriculture Joint Sector Review (JSR) process. • A Leadership Council was formed in 2012: committed to advancing progress on investment in sustainable and inclusive agricultural development in Africa in alignment with CAADP.
- 4. Status of New Alliance implementation • So far 10 countries are partners in the New Alliance: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal and Tanzania • The first progress report for 2013-2014 was produced in June 2014 and is available on www.New- Alliance.org • The 2014-2015 report will be ready by the end of September 2015, based on validated country reports under preparation
- 5. 2014-15 New Alliance Review Process • Initiated by African Union in June 2015 with letters to Ministers of Agriculture in the 10 NA countries • ReSAKSS supported AUC/NPCA in linking with country NA/GA teams to draft the country reports • Country reports validated at national workshop during August, facilitated by Africa Lead II program • Validated country reports will be used to compile the continental report for presentation and endorsement by the Specialized Technical Committed (STC) of Ministers early October
- 6. Some experiences and lessons • Good leadership provided by AU, specifically the Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture • Good response from Governments, given the short time (mid June to August 31) • Good commitments by the ReSAKSS team in the three regions • Good support from USAID in mobilizing donors at country level • Good support from Africa Lead II in facilitating country validation workshop • More time was needed for the exercise: Senegal and Malawi workshops in September; • Data needs to be validated before it is used in the reports
