Q3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and
                                  why?
Independent distribution
I have chosen an independent distributor to distribute my magazine ‘Eternal’. This is because I
believe that it will not appeal very much to mainstream audiences as my front cover uses emergent
ideology. An example of a distributor of magazines who uses an alternative front cover is ‘Vice’
magazine, and therefore I believe that this will be the best distributor for me.

Vice is primarily a magazine and distributor which focuses on the independent arts and culture.
Which I would think that my magazine would include, attracting to a niche audience. Vice is a
distributor known for having the identity of being more dangerous and daring, and challenges
dominant ideology, which is exactly what I think my magazine does. It also brings a unique
      element to the magazine.

Vice distribute their magazines themselves, and work out everything alone, so are not able to reply on
a major company for assistance, also magazines would not be available in smaller towns, but in larger
independent records stores in big cities such as Birmingham, London and Manchester.

One concern which I do have with the distributor Vice, is that they sell their magazines for free and
make no profit. I believe that keeping towards £1.50 for my magazine is a better idea, as in order
to keep my magazine running, I would need a fair amount of profit, it is also cheap enough for a
      student audience.
Where will I sell Eternal?
I plan on selling ‘Eternal’ directly to stores such as Urban Outfitters as I believe
that my target audience shop at this store, and it is included in my audience profile
research. It will be more likely to be picked up by people of my target audience at
shops they buy clothes from. I would also want to sell my magazine at places such
as record stores, art galleries, and cafes. Where the audience of Eternal would shop
and socialize, which is what Vice also promises with their distribution. I believe
that my magazine would be a success in record stores, and music stores as my
magazine aims at music mostly, being a hit with indie music lovers, and soundtrack
lovers.

A music store that I would possibly look at selling my magazine in would be
HMV, but HMV mainly looks at mainstream audiences. So it could be a better
idea to use a store such as pulp, which would also sell merchandise of the music
included in my magazine.
Multi-platform
The online platform which I shall use is specifically through the web, onto
a website.

For my multi-platform I intend to have a website for my magazine, which
is also shown on my front cover. In this website I will include more
articles, more reviews, photo-shoots, and would even create discussion
boards, so that my audience are able to interact with each other and discuss
music they enjoy. Which is called ‘Web 2.0’ which will highly influence
the website of my magazine. This would also attract many more people to
my magazine after discovering the website online, it would lead them
straight to my magazine in independent stores, and therefore I will gain
more of a customer base. I know that this would work as majority of my
target audience would be using the internet regularly, and by stumbling
upon this website they would want to buy my magazine.
Profit and strategy
The distribution strategy in which Vice use to sell magazines is by selling the magazines themselves rather than relying on a major company to do the
work for them, like mainstream companies. Therefore the magazines would not be available in smaller towns as it won't be as popular, and would have
to be sold in larger cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and London. Logistical framework would not be used in this case either as it is a magazine
with emergent ideology and not dominant ideology and therefore the ideology would not relate and favor to the mainstream audience and therefore
would not be able to get to outlets. Especially in mainstream outlets, such as 'Tesco'. Vice magazine would give out 89,000 issues a year for free,
whereas a mainstream magazine would sell more such as FHM selling 890,000 copies. I would want my magazine to be sold for a bit of money
(£1.50 an issue) so over a year many copies may not be sold as much as FHM as it does not relate to the mainstream audience, but I believe that with
advertising that most of the money will come through in that area, allowing me to keep up 'Eternal' magazine.
