Matter

           Pure Substances Mixtures

Compound Element Homogenous Heterogeneous
                                  Mixture Mixture
Mixture

A mixture is two compounds that can be
separated by physical means and can maintain
it’s physical property.
Compound

A compound is two substances that have been
chemically combined and can be separated into
simpler substances by chemical means.
Element

Simplest form of a pure substance and cannot be
broken down any further and can’t be broken
down any further.
Homogeneous Mixture

A homogeneous mixture is where one thing is
dissolved in another.

E.X: Salt Water, Lemonade, Milk
Heterogenous Mixture

A heterogenous mixture is two substances that
are mixed but not combined

E.X: Vinegar and Oil, M&M’s
Colloids

A colloid is a homogeneous mixture that have
large particles that are not dissolved and are
evenly distributed.
Solution

A solution is a homogeneous mixture when one
thing is dissolved in the next.
Science matter powerpoint
Distillation

A process that separates the substance in a
solution (mixture) based on boiling points.

E.X: Sulfur and Sodium Chloride
Filtration

A process that separates materials based on the
size of the particle
Evaporation

A process used to isolate a solid dissolves in a
liquid

E.X: Sodium Chloride and Water
Observing Chemical
         Properties

Chemical Properties can be observed only when
the substances in a sample of a matter are
changing into different substances.
Flammability

Flammability is a material’s ability to burn in the
presence of oxygen
Reactivity

How readily a substance combines chemically
with other substances.
Recognizing Chemical
          Change

There are three ways to recognize chemical
change. You can recognize it using the change in
color, the production of gas, or the formation of a
precipitate.
Change in Color

Is a clue that a chemical change has produced at
least one new substance
Production of Gas

The production of gas can be a clue to chemical
change
Formation of a Precipitate

Any solid that forms and seperates from a liquid
mixture is called a precipitate. A chemical change
that alters their structure.
Is Change Chemical or
          Physical

When matter undergoes a chemical change, the
composition of a matter changes. When matter
undergoes a physical change, the composition of
the matter remains the same.
