Jake OBrien Media Sing street Sing Street (2016, Ireland/England/USA) Boy meets girl, girl unimpressed, boy starts band 1 Intro- up to We have to form a band A young boy is forced to move from his safe private school, due to lack of income with his family. Almost immediately, he is feeling like an outcast, even though he makes friends with a small group kids in his year, who are also out casted. As he walks out of the school gates he sees this beautiful girl and is told he doesnt have a chance. He then approaches the girl introducing himself, saying that he is in a band and he needs her in the music video. 2 Act 1- we need to make a band, he says and walks away smug. Him and his new band go around the school posting flyers and visiting everyone he thinks of, who plays an instrument that is. Once they get the band started, find a location and start filming, the girl turns up ready to film. However, she is slightly unimpressed but she likes the song so she plays along with it. 3 Act 2- making it work- more videos aiming for the concert. As the band are making more videos and are actually starting to sounds pretty decent. The girl starts to become interested in the boy. After the boy realises him and the girl are getting closer and closer, he starts to experiment with his appearance. He decides to start wearing multiple different choices of clothing, and applies loads of different makeup, what most people are against him doing.
- 2. Jake OBrien Media Sing street Arriving at school Cinematography Shot/ reverse shot point of view is used to give the audience an idea of how Cosmo is going to fit in his new school. Mid shot, not close up of his face, to show him in the crowd. He witnesses kids spitting, throwing rats, fighting and smoking. Moving camera to show him moving through the school. It is also to show the audience cosmos emotional state and how he is coping in this new school. Editing/ sound Simple cuts between mid-shot of cosmos walking, his face and everything he sees. Cosmo is the kid who just wants to be the neutral kid whats completely understandable as we know he doesnt want to be there. Non-diegetic sound is used for the whole scene Nasty comments are made towards Cosmo Close up sounds are used- accentuates the moment of impactful comments towards cosmos You can hear enough of the non diegetic sound to hear a few comments directed towards him. This is also to hear the sound of the head but in the fight. This is to make the audience make a quick, nasty judgement about the school so the audience sides with Cosmo. Mise en scene In this scene the filmportrays the children in all different ways. All of the children are wearing the same school uniform but each student wears it in their own style. This shows a sense of independence even know they have the same clothing. And even though the film was released in 2016 its set in the 80s, which means they were smoking and spitting showing a rebellious and dangerous side what once again shows independence. Drive It Like You Stole It Mise en scene In this scene all of the band were experiencing a performance in Connors imagination. The band were wearing a more goth like type outfits with more detail, like they were professional. But in the real performance they were wearing cheap clothes and the band

You can also see in Connors imaginary performance that there is a group of balloons in the corner what can again describe the difference between his fantasy and the depressing reality. Furthermore, everyone in Connors imagination are acting out pf character as his recently divorced parents are dancing together to his song as if they were on their honeymoon. Messages and values In the film, the American Dream is constantly shown to the audience. Where if you try your hardest you can succeed at anything if you put your mind to it. For example, Connor wants to get the girl and impress her, her tried his hardest and he succeeded. And if you want to get technical, sing street is a mainstream heterosexual love story as Connor and Raphina sailing away on the sea and even though Connors having family issues, they are still willing to things for each over. sound Diegetic sound is used when the band is playing the music. Its diegetic because the characters in the filmas well as the audience can hear the music playing. However, the scene is a fantasy scene si in the real hall the music is being played on a tape recorder and the kids in the band are actually miming. And in the fantasy, the kids are singing and playing all of the instruments. Editing There isnt actually any real rhythm, its just invisible editing of the band and crowd. Except, from the beginning to the end, Cosmo keeps looking at the door waiting for the girl to arrive. This is a reverse shot. A shot/reverse of narrative moments are shown in cosmos fantasy to display how things used to be alright and what changes he wants done in his life to make it better. Cinematography When the girl arrives, the camera follows her to display the transformation of the real world to cosmos fantasy. You could say that the girl entering is the dawn of something great concluding cosmos fantasy. All together This scene has us all of the techniques I have mentioned to give a depressing reality compared to Connors vibrant fantasy. The use of cinematography lets the audience see Raphina slowly walking through the schools hall and this shows a slight transitin between Connors fantasy and reality. This point is further supported by the films use of mise-en-
- 4. Jake OBrien Media Sing street scene. Connor and the bands clothing in his fantasy are incredibly detailed with vibrant colours while in reality, they are wearing cheap clothings thats looks like a group of kids put them together.
