The Taj Mahal was commissioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to their 14th child. Construction began in 1632 on the south bank of the Yamuna River in Agra and took over 20 years to complete at a cost of around 32 million rupees. The Taj Mahal complex features gardens, mosques, and other structures spread over 55 acres and is considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, drawing both from Islamic traditions as well as Hindu, Persian and Turkish influences. It remains one of the most famous buildings in the world and a symbol of eternal love.
