The Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775 were early battles in the Revolutionary War. The British forces aimed to capture and destroy rebel supplies in Concord but found most had already been moved. Though the British succeeded at Lexington, they were pushed back to Boston by American forces at Concord in the first major victory for the rebels. The battles marked the outbreak of armed conflict between British troops and American militia, and were a key step toward American independence.
