The H.L. Hunley was the first submarine to successfully sink an enemy ship during wartime. In 1864, the Hunley, commanded by Lieutenant George Dixon, torpedoed and sank the USS Housatonic off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. However, the Hunley also sank afterwards, killing Dixon and his crew. Their remains were recovered in 2000 and the Hunley has since been conserved at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center. Visitors can now learn about the Hunley and its historic mission at the nearby Charleston Museum, which features a life-sized model of the submarine.
