CHANGE

Overview
 The NRL in Recent Years
     Who/What is the NRL?
 Why do they need an Independent Commission?

 Who is on the new commission and why/how did they get there?

 What are they going to do?
     Negotiating a T.V broadcast rights deal
     Competition expansion
     Increasing the salary cap
     Rescheduling the Rep Season
     Development of Grassroots footy

 Conclusion – Will it work?
The NRL in Recent Years
 Who/What is the NRL?
 National Rugby League, 16 teams from 3 states & NZ.
 The NRL is owned 50/50 by both News Ltd and the ARL
 ARL is made up from NSWRL and QRL

 Past years have painted an ugly public image of the game
     DUI
     Assault
     Salary cap scandal
     Match fixing
 Clubs going into serious debt

Something had to be done, so with the T.V rights coming up, it was decided
that an independent commission would be able to tackle the games biggest
issues without the previous personal agendas and bias that have plagued the
    game internally.
Who is apart of the
Commission?
 8 Independent Commissioners
 John Grant, Chairman – Former QLD international and managing director in internet technology
    company Data3
 Catherine Harris – Chairperson of Harris Farm Markets
 Ian Elliot - Brand strategist and former chairman and managing director of George Patterson Bates
 Peter Gregg - Executive director and chief financial officer of Leighton Holdings
 Gary Pemberton - Former chairman of QANTAS and SOCOG
 Jeremy Sutcliffe – CSR chairman
 Wayne Pearce - Balmain Tigers, NSW and Australian legend
 Chris Sarra - Executive director of Queensland Technology’s Stronger Smarter Institute, Aboriginal
    Educator

 Why them?
 Each member has either business or sporting experience, with
the majority having detailed experience in overseeing/running a
      complex organisation.
What is the Independent Commission going to
do?

 Negotiating a T.V broadcast rights deal
 Bidding war between media moguls for next 5 year contract
 Last contract was worth $500 million, this one is suppose to
    fetch between $900 m and $1.4 billion
 By turning the sport into a more watchable product, they are
able to sell more expensive advertising space to the
    broadcasters and sponsors – commodification.
 Will be a big boost for existing clubs, with 14 of the 16
    running with substantial debt
 Once money is secured, many aspects of the game can
    improve
Expanding the Competition
 Recent push of AFL into League strongholds
such as Western Sydney and Gold Coast
 Plans to add two new teams in 2015
 Teams suggested for; Ipswich, Sunshine
Coast, Central QLD, Perth, Adelaide, Central
Coast, Paupa New Guinea, Fiji and Wellington
 Would rather add new teams than relocate
Increasing the Salary Cap
 A more expensive T.V deal, means more
distribution of revenue to clubs, therefore
allowing a rise in the salary cap and the
    average player wages
 Salary cap is expected to rise from $3.7 million
    to possibly $7 million
 Possibly match those of AFL, Union and Super
League – stop the flow of players leaving the
    NRL for bigger contracts
Representative Football
 Rescheduling of the State of Origin series to
    Monday Nights
 Scrapping the City vs Country and ANZAC test
 Its about maximising profit from these games,
    but also maintaining player welfare
 Not to long a turnaround between rep and club
    games
 Monday night games are expected to move to
Sunday twilight timeslot – loss in revenue
Grassroots Football
 New Rugby League headquarters aligns the
    games administration under one roof
 Provide better and more direct funding to
    local/community/school Rugby League
 Attempt to tackle the expansion into Western
    Sydney, League’s heartland
 Adapting weight for age style competitions at
    junior and schoolboy level
Conclusion
 The introduction of the Independent
Commission will free up the business side of
things for the game, allowing itself to focus on
a goal of expanding and developing youth
whilst reaping the benefits financially from the
commodification of the new T.V rights deal.
