Lucy Buykx's research investigates how cooks interact with recipe instructions to inform the design of interactive recipe systems. Through focus groups and interviews, she found that most cooks collect recipes but few use interactive technologies. Her experiments compare different recipe instruction formats and found that structured recipes with sub-goals were easier to understand than segmented or integrated instructions. However, cooking remains a complex domain. Future work includes developing prototypes for in-home use and designs that support deviations from recipes.
