- 1. DIGNITARIES from across North West Leicestershire have visit- ed Coalville's new-look fire and rescue station, which has been officially reopened and is ready for action. Councillor Graham Allman, chairman of North West Leicestershire District Council and North West Leicestershire's MP Andrew Bridgen joined Steve Corrall, chair of the Combined Fire Authority, to unveil a special plaque to officially open the new station on Wednesday, October 1. The approx 贈3.1 million project, delivered on time, saw the complete rebuild of the station, the construc- tion of an accommodation block and new training facility to help begin the implementation of the Day Crewing Plus system. Dave Webb, chief fire and rescue officer, who attended the event, believes the new-look station will complete its aims of serving the community more effectively. He said: The new accommoda- tion block and training facilities at the station will enhance our ability to deliver an effective fire and res- cue service to the people of Coalville and the surrounding areas. This forms part of our ongoing long-term project approved by the Combined Fire Authority, to refur- bish and redevelop six fire and res- cue stations within Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. During the rebuild, firefighters resided in temporary accommoda- tion on Atlas Road. To continue the crew's on-going practical training, construction of a new smoke house was also complet- ed. Cllr Allman, said: "It is a great thing for North West Leicestershire and Coalville in particular. "There has been a big investment for this to happen and they will continue to do a fantastic job in keeping the community safe." The dignitaries and guests were treated to hot drinks and biscuits as part of the opening ceremony along with speeches from David Webb, Steve Corrall and Group Manager Mick Grewcock. The guests were then given a tour of the station to highlight its changes and improvements. The Combined Fire Authority are currently consulting on proposals to make changes to Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service over the next five years. These consultations, however, do not affect Coalville. Cllr John Coxon, member of the fire authority, said: "I think this station is not only fantastic for Coalville but the whole area. "Seeing the building renovated so well, will instil confidence in peo- ple that the fire service can serve the community and this will make people feel safer in their communi- ties." This is the sixth fire station to be renovated across the whole county of Leicestershire, with the other five being Shepshed, Hinckley, Melton, Oakham and Birstall. The proposals, to build on land off Loughborough Road, were passed at a planning committee meeting on Tuesday, October 7. Councillor David Everitt, who represents Thringstone on North West Leicestershire District Council, said: "We all have to have our fair share of houses and for a development of this size, the loca- tion chosen is the best for the vil- lage. "As there were so few objections put forward, had we tried to resist this application, it would have gone to appeal and would have created big costs to the taxpayer. "I'm glad that the drainage is going to be addressed as part of the application and I am also happy that traffic calming measures on Loughbourogh Road, which a lot of motorists find dangerous, are going to be removed. "I am sure this will increase resi- dents' support for the application." As well as the houses, a new vehicular access point is proposed onto Loughborough Road and coun- cillors also raised the issue for drainage systems to be looked at indepth as part of passing the appli- cation. Traffic calming measures placed at the bottom of Loughborough Road, which have blighted many residents travelling in and out of Thringstone, will also be removed as part of the plans. Cllr John Legrys, who represents Coalville on North West Leicestershire District Council, said: "I am very pleased that the proposals have gone ahead. "Myself and others have been campaigning for more than ten years to get rid of these chicanes on Loughborough Road, so it's great to see a development that will allow this to happen." Cllr Leon Spence, who represents Thringstone on NWLDC, said: "I am very pleased the application has gone through. "We must make sure highways access is safe and ensure that sew- ers are fit for purpose. "These issues were raised during the planning committee meeting and I am confident they will be address by planning condition. "No development is going to please everyone, although the exceptionally low number of objec- tions is a good sign."
