An edition of the Coalville Times
Swadlincote Times
A TEN-YEAR-OLD girl has been
appointed to represent
Swadlincotes Royal British Legion
as their first mascot.
After raising hundreds of pounds
for the Poppy Appeal and taking
part in a variety of fundraising
events, Mia George was chosen as
mascot and will represent the
legion and the town on fundraising
and ceremonial events.
Mia, who is the daughter of
branch members Matt and Kate
George, was overjoyed to be chosen
and for her first event in the role,
she joined the branch in Belgium
for its First Word War commemora-
tions.
She said: It was very exciting as
I knew I would have some special
moments and I could help the Royal
British Legion out.
I couldnt wait for my first oppor-
tunity and I didnt have to wait too
long, going to Belgium as part of the
First World War Centenary.
I was very nervous but happy to
have such a big part to play and I
wanted to remember all those that
gave their lives so I could have
mine.
The idea of a branch mascot came
about after Swadlincotes branch
secretary, Glyn Jackson, read about
the Accrington Branch appointing
their first ever RBL branch mascot.
He immediately thought of Mia
and asked if she would be interest-
ed in taking on the role for the
Swadlincote branch.
Mr Jackson said: We are really
looking forward to seeing Mia at a
lot of future events being held by
the British Legion.
She is really excited to get
involved and will be an inspiration
to people out there who want to join
the legion.
A lot of people get the impres-
sion that to be a member of the
legion you have to have been a
member of the Armed Forces, but
this is not the case as we do have a
youth section for youngsters from
the age of 12.
We are always looking for new
members to join and if we can get
more youngsters and somebody
willing to help them with their own
fundraising activities, it will really
benefit the work of the Legion.
There are no set rules for how
long Mia can hold the position, but
she may hand it over in two years
time, when she can become a youth
member.

A FORMER head
girl has had her
mouth taped up
with Sellotape at
a Swadlincote
secondary school
to stop her and
her classmates
from talking in
lesson.
Eleven-year-old Elise
Smith, of Brunt Lane,
Woodville, was made to
sit with Sellotape over
her mouth by a teacher
at The William Allitt
School, in Sunnyside,
who repeatedly asked
the class to stop talking
in December last year.
Elise, who is in her first
year at the school and
was a former head girl
at her primary school,
kept the tape on her
mouth for 15 minutes.
Elises mother and
father have complained
to the school, which has
recently been placed
under special measures,
Derbyshire County
Council and Ofsted
about the incident.
Becky Smith, Elises
mother, said: We are
really disappointed with
what has taken place
and feel let down by the
school.
Elise is a very hard-
working girl, always
reaching and going
above her predicted tar-
gets and would never
cause any trouble.
We chose William
Allitt because of its good
reputation and thought
it would give Elise the
best start in life.
Starting secondary
school is a very daunting
experience, especially
when most of her friends
went to other, closer
schools, so for this to
happen is really shock-
ing for all of us.
You cant lay a finger
on children these days
and those protections
are in place to stop these
things from happening.
We will continue to
fight this.
After the incident Elise
was kept off school by
her parents for three
days, asking for work to
be sent to her at home.
After she returned to
school, Elises parents
reluctantly allowed her
to go back into the
teachers class.
William Allitt School
has confirmed the inci-
dent took place and has
worked alongside the
county council to carry
out an investigation.
Jean Mead, chair of
governors at The
William Allitt School,
said: The welfare of
pupils is always our top
priority.
This was a misguided
action rather than a
malicious one.
It happened in
December last year.
It shouldnt have
taken place under any
circumstances, the
teacher immediately
regretted his actions
and apologised.
We worked alongside
the local authority to
carry out a thorough
investigation and appro-
priate action was
taken.
After an inspection of
the school by Ofsted, in
May, William Allitt was
placed under special
measures after their
ranking dropped from
satisfactory to inade-
quate.
