COMMUNITY Stalwarts, Eileen
Banton and Graham Nutt were
presented with the Councils Order
of Merit in recognition of their
years of community contribution.
Councillor Pat Murray, chairman
of South Derbyshire District
Council and Chief Executive Frank
McArdle presented the awards at
the full council meeting held at the
civic offices in Swadlincote.
Cllr Murray, said: "It gave me
great pleasure to present both
Graham Nutt and Eileen Banton
with their Orders of Merit.
"The work of Graham in the
Magic Attic is fantastic and shows
a long history of Swadlincote and
South Derbyshire and it is the first
port of call for anyone who wishes
to find out more about the area.
"The Magic Attic is his legacy
and will continue long into the
future.
"Eileen was one of the first peo-
ple I met when I came to South
Derbyshire and she assisted me in
setting up the Neighbourhood
Watch for Midway, which is still
going strong."
Mrs Banton, who is retiring after
36 years with Derbyshire Police,
said: "I feel very proud to think
that the council wants to honour
me for my work in the area.
"In my time with the force I
worked closely with the council and
struck up a great working relation-
ship.
"I have always had an affinity
with South Derbyshire.
"I started my service there and
finished it there and I could not
have planned it any better.
Mr Nutt is being honoured for
his role in protecting, preserving
and presenting the history of the
area via his work at the Magic
Attic.
Since 1987, the historian has
overseen work at the site, which
houses an archive of photographs,
newspapers and artefacts from yes-
teryear.
Mr Nutt said: I was little sur-
prised but very proud to receive the
Order of Merit.
"I have worked closely with the
council over the years and it is a
great honour.
I am also very proud of the vol-
unteers who have supported the
Magic Attic from the beginning.
"I am incredibly grateful for
their support and dedication.
MORE than 40 small
businesses across
Derbyshire and South
Derbyshire have been
awarded grants of up to
贈75,000 through the
Global Derbyshire Small
Business Support
Programme.
Derbyshire Economic Partnership,
backed by Derbyshire County
Council, secured 贈3m for small busi-
nesses from the Government's
Regional Growth Fund.
Around 贈728,000 has already been
awarded to small firms in and
around Swadlincote and South
Derbyshire to help boost the econo-
my and generate jobs.
Two businesses in Swadlincote
and one in Melbourne have received
a combined total of 贈54,059.
Councillor Joan Dixon, Derbyshire
County Council cabinet member for
jobs, economy and transport, said:
We know times are tough for small
businesses and understand they may
think twice about committing the
necessary investment to grow.
"But the match funding available
through this project might just give
them the help needed to take the
next step towards job creation.
So if you run a small business
then what are you waiting for?
"Your company could be eligible
for a grant of up to 贈75,000, so get in
touch."
Specialist lighting manufacturers
Daray and Shepshed Glazing have
received 贈20,251 and 贈13,079 respec-
tively.
MAE Trading, based in
Melbourne, has also gained 贈20,729.
Gary Musson, chairman of
Swadlincote's Chamber of Trade, is
delighted with the news.
He said: "Any support beit finan-
cial, advisory or other, is much need-
ed for all businesses and obviously I
am very pleased that they are going
to businesses in Swadlincote and
South Derbyshire.
"We are holding our own (in
Swadlincote and South Derbyshire)
but it is still a difficult trading envi-
ronment and anything that helps
businesses stand fast or even grow is
very much appreciated."
Richard Horsley, Chairman of the
Derbyshire Economic Partnership,
said: The aim is to champion the
needs of business, promote growth
across our great county and ensure
all the key movers and shakers in
Derbyshire are focused on delivering
jobs and prosperity.
"Global Derbyshire demonstrates
our commitment to this aim but the
funding is time limited.
I would urge all businesses with
eligible projects to contact us."
