The document discusses how the architecture firm NBBJ is leveraging parametric and generative design processes for civic and sports projects. It provides an overview of two case studies where parametric modeling helped address complex design problems and generate unique design features. For the Kintex Expo project, parametric tools were used to develop the curving roof geometry and coordinate related building systems. For the Shell Stadium design, parametric modeling with torus geometry helped rationalize the shell forms into standardized panel modules. The document examines how these projects demonstrate NBBJ's growing use of advanced digital tools over the design and construction process.

Scenic Wall
Field: Healthcare
Scope: Students were paired up and given
two weeks to complete a futuristic (yet
feasible) healthcare environment.
Programs: AutoCAD, SketchUP
Summary: Another attribute to the room we
considered was the patient experience. The
patient has a viewport to nature through the
window as studies have shown that patients
require less pain medications when associated
with positive imagery. However, if this
viewport isnt accessible for any given reason,
the curved smart wall in front of them gives an
option for viewing nature artificially. In addition,
this would give patients the ability to video chat
their loved ones or even surfing the web thus
giving patients more control.

Field: Video game development
Scope: To create a corporate space
that emphasized primary means of
egress and implement A.D.A. standards
into the break room.
Programs: AutoCAD, SketchUP, Visualizer
Summary: The space was designed in
order to have an efficient circulation
space that allows for the safe exit of
occupants. In addition, the color scheme
and signage inspired by the company
culture are integrated into the wayfinding of
circulation.

Cake Room
Field: Video game development
Scope: To create a corporate space that
emphasized primary means of egress and
implement A.D.A. standards into the break
room.
Programs: AutoCAD, SketchUP, Visualizer
Summary: The breakroom compensates for
wheel chair height toe kicks and seating.
The window allows for a viewport to a pond.
Lastly, the name Cake Room was also a
inspired from the game Portal which is an
underlying humurous theme throughout the
title.

Programs: AutoCAD, SketchUP
Summary: The objective in the game
Portal is to simply work your way through
the level solving puzzles with a futuristic
gun. The user shoots an entrance portal on
one surface and an exit portal on another
surface allowing one to move through as
if its a door. In the top right the user is
guided by signage inspired by this concept.

Perspective
Field: Furniture dealership
Scope: Analyze the what type of
adjacencies would be best suited for an
open office environment while incorporating
company culture.
Programs: AutoCAD, SketchUP, V-Ray
Summary: As WRG has many visitors,
it was important to maintain a positive
work environment for the employees while
also factoring noise considerations into
an open plan. As the furniture industry is
shifting towards open and collaborative
atmospheres, spaces often tend to lose
privacy and even create too much noise.
Therefore, certain departments were zoned
in relation to frequency of higher and lower
noise levels, along with main points of visitation
and architectural features. The render to the
left shows an example of a space that becomes
more cut off with an acoustical wall, yet still keeps
an open ambience.

Field: Furniture dealership
Scope: Analyze the what type of

for an open office environment while
incorporating company culture.
Programs: AutoCAD, InDesign
Summary: The plan to the right illustrates
a simple diagram of loud areas zoned
away from quieter areas, with a middle
ground as they get closer together. In
addition, the furniture selections are also
placed depending on acoustical privacy.

Field: Hospitality
Scope: To illustrate proper hand
drafting techniques for portfolio review.
Summary: Each student was given
freedom of choosing their type of
commercial space that had to be
combined with a residential space. The
commercial space chosen was an asian
fusion restaurant featuring a bar and
outdoor patio with a music venue. The
space is inspired by a popular spot in
Denton called Oak Street Draft House.
