SOLVING EQUATIONS
ANALYZE LEARNER

 24 - 8th grade AP students
 20 Caucasians, 3 African-Americans, 1 Asian American
 10 boys, 14 girls
OBJECTIVES
My students will solve equations using the correct order
of operations by participating in relay solving games,
collaborative group work, songs for the order of
operations, exercises with calculator, and introduction to
wolframalpha with a 100% accuracy in the span of 1 week.
DAY-BY-DAY BREAKDOWN
DAY 1
 Students will review their prior knowledge of the

order of operations.
 Students will be taught how to solve equations for

one variable- first as a class, then individual practice,
then in groups of 4.

DAY 2
 Students will continue practice of solving variables

for a single equation by participating in a relay race
of equation solving.
 Students will be introduced to a system of equations

with two variables.
DAY-BY-DAY BREAKDOWN
DAY 3
 Students will learn to solve the system of equations

by method of elimination.
 Students will continue to practice solving equations

in groups of 4.

DAY 4
 Students will learn to solve the system of equations

by method of substitution.
 Students will continue to practice solving equations

in groups of 4.
DAY-BY-DAY BREAKDOWN
DAY 5
 Students will review solving equations for one variable and solving system of equations using both the

substitution and elimination methods.
 Students will be taught how to graph each equation with the provided calculators.
 Students will be introduced to WolframAlpha.com for fast and easy equation solving computations.
