WHAT IS A VOLCANO?
#tbgradeschool
A VOLCANO IS...
+
Volcanoes are openings in the earth's crust
created when molten material under the crust
is propelled upward through the surface. The
magma chamber collects the magma that is
expelled to the surface in an eruption.
Philippine and World
Volcanoes
(brace yourselves for we are about to
meet hot lava mommas)
Mt. Cabaluyan
Mount Cabaluyan volcano is located on the SE tip of Leyte Island,
Philippines. It is is an andesitic stratovolcano with steep radial erosion
valleys and ridges that are moderately to thickly vegetated. It contains a
summit crater filled by a lake.
Mt. Cocoro
Cocoro is next to Cocoro Island and is located
in Province of Palawan, Mimaropa, Philippines.
Mt. Kanlaon
The country's largest active volcano and Visayas' highest mountain is Mt.
Kanlaon in Negros Island. As the highest mountain in the Visayas, it is majestic.
As the country's largest active volcano, it is fearsome. Its 1996 eruption killed 7
mountaineers - in an account vividly recalled to the blogger by Rey Castellos,
the guide who rescued some of the foreign climbers and witnessed the
eruption, barely making it alive.
Mt. Mayon
Mayon, the most famous of the active volcanoes of the
Philippines, is a perfect stratovolcano rising to 2462 m on
Luzon Island. It erupts very frequently.
Mt. Smith
Smith Volcano, also known as Mt. Babuyan, is a cinder cone on
one of the Babuyan Islands off northern Luzon island in the
Philippines. It has erupted 6 times, the last of which was on 1924.
A team of volcanologists visited last July 8, 1993 but found no
activity and recorded no volcanic earthquakes.
Mt. Iraya
Dubbed as the "Mountain of Winds", Mt. Iraya stands majestically
in the northern part of Batan Island in the province of Batanes.
The dormant volcano is meters away from the sole airport of the
island located at the capital Basco.
Mt. Taal
Taal volcano with its lake-filled 15x20 km wide Talisay (Taal) caldera is a
beautiful caldera volcano, but also one of the most active and dangerous
volcanoes of the Philippines.
Mt. Pelee
A dormant volcano situated in the Caribbean island of
Martinique. In 1902, it erupted in a massive horizontal
explosion sending huge clouds of ash released
towards the nearby town of Saint-Pierre.
Mt. Fujiyama
Popularly known as Mount Fuji, is an active volcano which last erupted in 1708.
It is incidentally the tallest mountain in Japan. It is an iconic volcano. Mount Fuji
is 3,776 meters high and it is snow clad throughout the year, with five lakes
surrounding it. Currently in a state of dormancy, there has not been any
eruption reported for more than 300 years. Mount Fuji is now a popular tourist
location with a large number of climbers actively scaling the mountain top.
Mt. Krakatoa
A dormant volcano in Indonesia, which awakened and produced
one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in 1883. So massive was
the eruption that the sound of it was heard as far away as
Australia. Its widely reported as the loudest sound heard in
recorded history.
Mauna Loa
Mauna Loa, world's largest mountain and volcano, is an archetype of a basaltic shield
volcano in its late mature stage of life, and only about 600,000-1,000,000 years old.
Although not erupting as frequently as its younger neighbour Kilauea, it is also one of
the most active volcanoes of the world. When it erupts, its eruptions are usually huge
and produce large rivers of lava that have repeatedly threatened the town of Hilo.
Thanks for listening!
