• #7: Located at Zimmerman’s North and South doors Different materials can trigger the alarm Always desensitize material when checking out items to a patron If the alarm goes off, our security guard will intercept the patron as they walk through When the patron returns to the counter: check their library account for the items, desensitize the material security gates are activated when magnetized material passes through the sensor, so be sure to always desensitize material when checking out to a patron, including ILL items we do not desensitize are Videos, CDs, Laptops, and Tablets Materials from other libraries, bookstore materials, and some electronic items all may set off the alarm. Multiple people through the gate at the same time may also trigger it. You don’t need to chase down patrons when they set the security gate alarm off, the security guard will intercept them and direct them back to the service desk to have any items desensitized. Once the patron returns to the counter, check their library account for the items and make sure they are checked out, then desensitize the appropriate materials if everything appears to be fine. *If there are any issues, call a staff member. Attempt of theft should always be reported to the staff supervisor
• #8: A student employee should only get involved if he or she is trying to protect himself or herself from harm. As a rule, you should avoid getting verbally or physically involved. If you see someone stealing, DO call them out on it. Say, “Hey! What are you doing!?” but do not put yourself in danger. Take a description of the person and try to see where they go if they continue off with the equipment. For medical emergencies flag down a staff member or the security guard on duty to contact Campus Police
• #9: Alarms: Localized-notify staff, await instructions Building wide – prepare for evacuation, in the case of an evacuation, you would assist staff in evacuating the building Lockdown Situations: secure the doors, and then congregate in locked spaces away from any doors, windows, or hallways If you receive the order to evacuate: Assess the area to find the safest evacuation route. Remember, the safest route may not always be the closest or the way you normally enter the building. Take your essential belongings with you. Medication, purse, wallet, jacket or coat if needed. Move quickly to the nearest safe exit. Avoid elevators, and help those who need assistance, If it is something like carrying a person in a wheelchair, direct them to wait in the stairwell, and notify staff/fire dept. that someone needs assistance. Follow the directions of emergency responders and your supervisor. Move away from the building to a safe place, do not stand in an area where you know there is a floor to the library underneath. Don’t return to the building until you are allowed to do so by police officers on scene. Do not leave the waiting area with out checking in with your supervisor. Lockdowns/Shelter in place: In some instances, it is safer to shelter in place and wait for further instructions. Shelter in place orders are usually given to protect people from moving into an area where they could encounter danger. If you receive the order to shelter in place: We cannot keep anyone in the building. If someone wants to leave, allow them to do so, and then re-secure the doors.
