Outline:
The presence of self-control is a significant contributor to success in all areas of life and to the
avoidance of trouble. Researchers have found that self-control requires an energetic resource
that can be depleted as it is used throughout the day. Emotional labor (i.e. smiling even when
you might not want to such as a CNA tending to a dying or cantankerous patient). Other goals
that cause self-control depletion include:
• Politically correct speech
• Controlling thoughts
• Managing emotions
• Fixing attention
• Guiding behavior
• Meeting poor behavior with kindness
• Interracial interactions (for some people)
• Self-presentation and presentation management
• Making many choices
Research shows that depletion of this energy leads to undesired outcomes such as:
• Failure to achieve personal goals (i.e. dieting, nutrition, physical activity, self-development)
• Disregarding self-imposed spending limits
• Controlling aggressive responses when provoked
• Failing to use desired level of restraint relating to sexual impulses
• Decreased ability to make intelligent and logical decisions
Attendees will learn:
1. To identify causes of energy depletion that impact behavior, communications, fatigue, and
employee engagement.
2. Three simple and practical techniques that reduce the energy depletion caused by common work
situations.
3. How to help others recognize energy depleting activities and stop the energy drain.
