There is a perception in Ethiopian societies that disabilities are a result of punishment by spiritual figures, and families with disabled children are often labeled as such. An estimated 15 million Ethiopians, or 17.6% of the population, have a disability, and 95% of those live in poverty. Children with disabilities in Africa encounter significant economic, political, and social barriers that hinder their development and wellbeing, as they often lack basic needs and are excluded from policy agendas. While 19% of Americans have a disability, the employment rate for those with disabilities is much lower in Ethiopia than in the United States, and disabilities are viewed differently between the two countries.
