Three thousand troops are not sufficient to keep even a single U.S. military base in Afghanistan after 2014. This report, released jointly with the Institute for the Study of War, describes how to calculate the force requirements for keeping one single base in Afghanistan after 2014, concluding that it is not possible to do so with fewer than about 6,000 troops. The report identifies many (but not all) of the specific tasks and specialties required to keep an airbase capable of handling large cargo aircraft running and to protect it against known, current enemy capabilities. It also finds that a base manned at such a level would have virtually no ability to advise and assist the Afghan National Security Forces or even to conduct meaningful counter-terrorism operations. The notion of keeping only 3,000 troops in Afghanistan is militarily infeasible.

SUMMARY OF RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE:
United States Marine Corps: Octoberof 2006 to February 2011
Military OccupationSpecialty: 0311 Infantryman.
Dulab, Iraq: 08/ 2007 – 03/ 2008
While deployed to Dulab (Hit, Iraq) I was part of 1
st
Platoon, Animal Company as a 50
Cal. Gunner and driver in our Mobile section. I was responsible for maintaining rear
security on the majority of all our convoys in our area of operations throughout the city of
Hit and surrounding areas in the desert. Mobile sections also were stood up as a QRF
(Quick Reaction Force)designated to be on standby in case of hostile actions in our AO
(Area of operation) for any mobile or footpatrol that was operating outside of friendly
lines or any friendly forces that needed emergency re-supply. Mobile sections operated in
up- armored Humvees and M-RAP vehicles (mine resistant armored protected)in groups
of four or more. Mobile sections are trained to respond to IED’s (improvised explosive
devices) detonated and un- detonated by means of cordoning of the surrounding area and
calling EOD (explosive ordinance disposal) and either doing a detonation in place or
assessing the area after detonation for secondary IEDs or suspicious activity among the
locals. While operating in Dulab we did joint operations with the Iraqi Army, Navy EOD

and Navy seals including raids for high valued targets and desert sweeps for high valued
targets. Another large portion of our responsibilities while not conducting patrols and
operations outside of our COP (combat outpost)was maintaining static security
surrounding out COP ensuring there were Marines on post24/7 in shifts of 8-10 hours at
a time to deter and detect any possiblethreats to be made on and around our base,
keeping constant radio contactwith our SOG and COG (sergeant/corporal of the guard)
and all surrounding posts and any friendly unit patrolling the perimeter of our COP.

Platoon to Cop Vikings
Iraq, myself and 10 other Marines were hand selected to be part of an augmentation team
that would be inserted into the middle of Cop Viking at one of the many Iraqi Police
stations which included 100 Iraqi Police officers. Our team was in charge of all police
officers at this station, conducting weapons training, patrol training, and ensuring they
would be able to operate on their own without coalition forces. I personally was put in
charge of keeping a personal record of each Iraqi Police Officer at our station and their
pay each month. Each Marine had individual responsibilities among maintaining a secure
area and conducting contact patrols and security patrols while providing our Lieutenant
and Commanding officers with PSD(Personal Security Detail) whenever they needed to
interact with the local populous.
