The Looking Glass is an audiovisual interactive installation that responds to individuals by creating an altered representation of users. Participants enter a dark room with a fibre optic wall, which is activated by the movement and projects a distorted silhouette of the participants through the individual glowing strands of fibre optics. Any sound emitted by the user will be echoed and cause the projections to change colour based on volume. The installation allows participants to develop an awareness of an alternative self, which encourages interaction and reflection. It explores the line between the digital and physical using fibre optic.

Presented at SXSW Interactive 2014.
As responsive design and progressive enhancement become mainstream design practices, the decades old approach of using Adobe Photoshop to comp up page designs for clients is becoming increasingly irrelevant. A quick search online shows designers quickly clamoring for a better way to do their work.
Along with new tools to learn, there's also the challenge of acclimating a client base that has been used to seeing fully-rendered Photoshop designs for decades. How do these new practices benefit them?
This presentation looks at some "post-Photoshop" design practices and how they might fit into a designer's workflow. Additionally, Jeremy will share how a new design workflow has worked for his team at Clickfarm and how clients have received this new way of looking at their projects.

The samurai were powerful warriors in Japanese society from the 12th to 19th centuries who adhered to a code of honor. They practiced traditions like shudo, where older samurai would take on young male apprentices and engage in homosexual relationships as a way to teach virtues and strengthen bonds. Though controversial to modern Western perspectives, shudo was a culturally accepted practice for samurai at the time and thought to benefit both parties. As Japan modernized with Western influence, traditions like shudo declined but homosexuality remains more tolerated than in some Western cultures.

Comet allows for bidirectional communication between server and client by allowing long-lived HTTP connections. This overcomes limitations of traditional Ajax which uses polling. Comet enables new types of highly interactive web applications such as collaborative editing and streaming financial data. It works by having the client leave an HTTP request open to the server instead of closing after each response. The server can then push updates to the client without needing the client to poll repeatedly. There are different Comet architectures and techniques for implementing it on both the client-side, such as long polling and forever frames, and server-side. While not fully standardized, Comet provides a way to build real-time web applications today despite some browser limitations.
When running any amount of systems, gaining visibility into what they are doing can be a non-trivial matter. Starting on the path to monitoring can prove bumpy, and if you don¡¯t measure, you don¡¯t know. In this session, Michael Fiedler, Director of TechOps, will speak on personal experience with scalability, deployment, and monitoring challenges prior to using Datadog - and how that changed. He will cover how to get started, and examples of where monitoring the company's platform with Datadog provided the guiding light towards the team solving scalability problems.
