Checking Out Items at
The Hamilton Public Library
Social Story

Checking out items from the
Hamilton Public Library is simple.

If I placed a hold
on an item and it
is ready, I will go
to the hold shelf
to find it.

My item will be wrapped with a
paper that lists:
• The first three letters of my last
name
• The first letter of my first name
• The last three numbers of my
library card.

All holds are arranged in alphabetical
order by last name.

If the item I
want is in the
library, I can use
the Collection
and Call # from
the library
catalogue to find
it in the shelves.

The Collection
will be marked
with signs
hanging from the
ceiling or at the
end of the
shelves.
The Call # can
be found on the
item.

When I find my
hold or the item I
want, I can take it
to the self-check
computer to check
it out.

To check out my
item at the self-check,
I need to
first place my
library card on
the self-check
computer so the
barcode is under
the red scanner.

The self-check computer will
beep when it has read my library
card.

Then, I need to
enter my PIN on
the computer. I
can either press
the numbers on
the screen or use
the keypad on
the counter.

My PIN is usually the last four
numbers in my phone number.

I am able to see
my name on the
self-check
computer. If the
name is correct, I
press Next.

I can lay up to five
items flat on the
self-check
computer.
I should not stack
them or move
them though.

I then need to wait
for the names of
the items to turn
green on the self-check
computer
screen.
This means they
are now checked
out.

I can get a receipt
with my due dates
on it by selecting
Print Receipt.

If I have trouble
when you are
checking out at
the self-check
computers, I can
ask a library
staff member for
help.

I need to
remember to
unlock Blu-rays,
DVDs,
and CDs by
sliding my item
through the
decoupler.

The red lock on
the side will
change to green
once the item has
been unlocked.

I can now take my library items
home to enjoy!

[Bernard MIEGE, Professeur émérite de sciences de l’Information – Communication à l'Université Stendhal de Grenoble - Membre du GRESEC] La recherche en Information & Communication s’est beaucoup développée, surtout depuis le début du siècle. Si elle reste mal connue, c’est surtout parce que ses travaux ont du mal à se faire reconnaître, y compris par les professionnels de l’information, par comparaison aux discours d’expertise (surtout technologique) et aux ouvrages proposés par des essayistes. Mais assurément, elle a déjà beaucoup à dire. On s’attachera d’abord à préciser ce qui constitue sans doute deux de ses apports essentiels : - d’une part, grâce à la critique argumentée, elle permet de se mettre à distance de toute une série de notions-écran qui encombrent le marché des idées en fournissant à bon compte un prêt à penser: la société de l’information, l’ère des réseaux, la société de connaissance, la convergence, la collaboration, la diversité culturelle, les industries créatives, et même le numérique, etc. - d’autre part, elle aide à inscrire dans la longue durée les phénomènes qui émergent et qui sont généralement sont présentés dans le temps de l’immédiateté quand ils ne sont pas anticipés, et donc perçus comme entièrement novateurs. Cela concerne tout particulièrement les médiations (que deviennent-elles quand elles sont appelées à se médiatiser ?) ou les pratiques culturelles et informationnelles (quant on ne les réduit pas aux usages des nouveaux dispositifs) ? On présentera ensuite deux innovations ou mutations majeures (car il en est) et surtout on indiquera en quoi elles méritent d’être qualifiées ainsi ; il sera ainsi question successivement de : - la formation quasiment ex nihilo d'une toute nouvelle filière industrielle de recherche d'information (à l'initiative de Google) ; - les transformations à l’œuvre dans l’édition scientifique et technique. Enfin, on s’interrogera sur la signification à accorder à l’articulation de l’Information et de la Communication ( et de ses techniques, comme de ses stratégies), et on se demandera si cette caractéristique centrale est spécifique, ou pas, des sociétés contemporaines.

[Jacques KERNEIS - Docteur en Sciences de l’Education, qualifié MCF en SIC et en Sciences de l’Education PRCE Documentation, ESPE de Bretagne – CREAD - CERSIC-PREFics] Dans cette communication, nous situerons la place d’une unité d’enseignement (UE) nommée « Education aux médias et à l’information » dans le cursus de la formation actuelle des professeurs-documentalistes à l’ESPE de Bretagne. Nous verrons comment elle s’articule avec une UE « Cultures numériques » en Master 1 et « pédagogie et numérique » en Master 2. Nous nous centrerons ensuite sur les compétences travaillées dans ces différentes UE en prenant appui sur les productions des professeurs-stagiaires et des étudiants (dans le cadre de ces différentes UE). Nous nous interrogerons sur la capacité d’un tel dispositif en termes de professionnalisation. Cela sera fait à partir d’une posture sémio-pragmatique (Meunier et Paraya, 1993, Odin, 2011, Georges, 2014).et une définition de la professionnalisation qui seront précisées. Nous utiliserons pour cela la distinction que fait Wittorski (2011) entre la professionnalisation qui relève d’une intention organisationnelle et le développement professionnel, qui est un processus de transformation du sujet, par le développement de compétences et par des négociations de nature identitaire. Nous tenterons de cerner les formes que peut prendre cette professionnalisation à l’ère des médias de diffusion et de connexion et de l’idéologie de la collaboration (Crozier et Friedberg, 1981, Lang, 2001; Pesqueux, 2011, Boudreault, 2015).

Beaucoup d’entre eux s’inscrivent dans une « logique de modèles à étapes », expression que nous expliciterons. Consciemment ou inconsciemment ils induisent après leur exposition en formation des formes d’application, de reproduction. Certains répondent également à une « logique prescriptive », expression que nous définirons également, courant parfois le risque d’une dérive de formatage. Ces modèles sont-ils pour autant des « modèles didactiques » ? Il nous faut appréhender un champ de validité plus large que celui « des démarches types », « des modèles à étapes », « des modèles prescriptifs » en dépassant la conception de « modèles à appliquer ». « Le modèle a aussi (et surtout ?) un rôle heuristique : en raison de l’approche nouvelle qu’il autorise, son emploi d’un champ du savoir à un autre dégage des perspectives jusqu’alors inexplorées », nous pouvons ainsi aborder la question de « modèles didactiques » à construire, et, composés d’un ensemble d’éléments en interaction. En rapport avec la thématique du Congrès «Enseigner-apprendre l’information-documentation ! Approches didactiques et démarches pédagogiques pour développer la culture de l’information des élèves» ; dans le contexte de convergence entre Information-Documentation, Culture de l’Information et Education aux Média et à l’Information (EMI) évoqué dans l’argumentaire et dans le cadre de nos recherches en didactique de l’Information-Documentation, nous proposons dans cette communication une réflexion soumise à la discussion au sein de la communauté professionnelle et scientifique autour de trois entrées. La première consiste à observer certains « modèles » issus de sources variées qui peuvent être conçus comme référent à reproduire. La seconde consiste à caractériser ce que l’on peut entendre par didactique de l’Information-Documentation aujourd’hui, notamment en tenant compte du concept d’info-diversité émergeant au cours de nos recherches. Les enseignants, les apprenants sont confrontés à différents types d’information (information brute, information traitée, information durable…) ; différentes natures d’information (physique, logique, analogique, numérique…) ; différents supports d’information, différentes formes d’information, différents formats d’information… Ils doivent gérer une variété de contextes d’information. Notre dernier chantier de recherche a contribué à élaborer des critères d’intelligibilité de la pratique enseignante en construction dans le rapport à cette « info-diversité ». La troisième porte sur l’élaboration de matrices curriculaires dynamiques, qui tiennent compte d’une progression des apprentissages, du développement de l’individu et de formes «d’efficacité réflexive». Puis, dans une seconde partie, nous tenterons de présenter, selon les pays sélectionnés, les démarches pédagogiques et leur mise en œuvre en contexte, ainsi que la progression des apprentissages info-documentaires aux différents niveaux de classe à partir des résultats d'une enquête hors de France menée par notre groupe. Enfin, dans la troisième partie, nous présenterons nos activités à l'international, la participation à des congrès, en tant que résolution de problèmes. Cette communication proposera un éclairage sur les pratiques de formations des professeurs documentalistes en matière de recherche instrumentée avec un logiciel documentaire et plus particulièrement de l’intérêt que peuvent présenter les thésaurus dans l’étape de questionnement du sujet, en tentant un comparatif avec d’autres outils ou méthodes (3QOCP, brainstorming, cartes mentales, etc.). Pourquoi les professeurs documentalistes continuent-ils à former à la recherche sur logiciel documentaire, alors même que leurs élèves tendent à délaisser les outils documentaires classiques ? Quelles sont les conséquences, pour leur pratique professionnelle, de l’évolution des outils documentaires qui tend à minimiser la place des langages documentaires ? Cette évolution fait-elle débat ? Quel intérêt pédagogique d’un thésaurus : permet-il d'améliorer les capacités à exprimer son besoin d'information et à formuler des requêtes efficaces ? [Le document de collecte : la place des écrits réflexifs dans la formation des élèves à l’évaluation de l’information] -Noël UGUEN - Prof. doc., Chargé de cours « culture num. » Univ. L'activité de lecture numérique engage souvent l’élève à élaborer des compilations d’extraits qu’il consigne dans un « document de collecte » comme l’a décrit Nicole Boubée dans sa thèse. Edité parallèlement à la recherche d’information, cet « écrit » permet de clôturer celle-ci et peut constituer un de carnet de bord et une « mémoire empirique » qui permet à l’élève de contextualiser les énoncés sélectionnés pour en évaluer les sources. Dans une visée de formation des élèves à la culture de l'information, le document de collecte agit comme un révélateur des pratiques informationnelles des élèves. Le professeur documentaliste peut prescrire un format de collecte et l’associer à un dispositif éditorial dans le but d’accompagner leurs recherches. Une expérimentation menée en TPE dans mon établissement durant deux années scolaires (2013-2014 et 2014-2015) par l'équipe des trois professeurs documentalistes permet de montrer comment les carnets de bord de la recherche d'information, réalisés avec l’outil Scoop it, amènent les élèves à confronter de manière réflexive leurs critères "spontanés" d'évaluation de l’information avec ceux qui sont exigés dans une démarche scientifique comptant pour le baccalauréat.

Accessible Visits Social Story: Visit 3 Basic

1. Checking Out Items at The Hamilton Public Library Social Story www.hpl.ca

2. Checking out items from the Hamilton Public Library is simple.

3. If I placed a hold on an item and it is ready, I will go to the hold shelf to find it.

4. My item will be wrapped with a paper that lists: • The first three letters of my last name • The first letter of my first name • The last three numbers of my library card.

6. All holds are arranged in alphabetical order by last name.

7. If the item I want is in the library, I can use the Collection and Call # from the library catalogue to find it in the shelves.

8. The Collection will be marked with signs hanging from the ceiling or at the end of the shelves. The Call # can be found on the item.

9. When I find my hold or the item I want, I can take it to the self-check computer to check it out.

10. To check out my item at the self-check, I need to first place my library card on the self-check computer so the barcode is under the red scanner.

11. The self-check computer will beep when it has read my library card.

12. Then, I need to enter my PIN on the computer. I can either press the numbers on the screen or use the keypad on the counter.

13. My PIN is usually the last four numbers in my phone number.

14. I am able to see my name on the self-check computer. If the name is correct, I press Next.

15. I can lay up to five items flat on the self-check computer. I should not stack them or move them though.

16. I then need to wait for the names of the items to turn green on the self-check computer screen. This means they are now checked out.

17. I can get a receipt with my due dates on it by selecting Print Receipt.

18. If I have trouble when you are checking out at the self-check computers, I can ask a library staff member for help.

19. I need to remember to unlock Blu-rays, DVDs, and CDs by sliding my item through the decoupler.

20. The red lock on the side will change to green once the item has been unlocked.

21. I can now take my library items home to enjoy!
