Departmental Overview
This position is part of a team responsible for the design and implementation of communications for
Student Affairs initiatives that serve the entire UC Berkeley campus. This team works collaboratively
with central campus offices (Public Affairs, University Relations), respective functional owners called
clients from a variety of departments (Undergraduate Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, Dean of
Students, Residential and Student Service Programs including house and dining and hospitality), and
partner offices (academic units, Administration and Finance) to successfully launch and sustain Student
Affairs communications initiatives.
Responsibilities
Working for the Student Affairs Communications department, the Communications Web Master
position will play a vital role in designing web interfaces and content, and multimedia processes. The
position designs, develops, modifies, tests and evaluates and maintains Student Affairs websites. The
Web Master will work as part of an integrated web, design and editorial team to ensure the
departments web sites are kept updated in terms of content, as well as front and back-end technology.
This includes helping deploy, update and maintain the front-end interfaces of many department
websites, as well as creating and updating new and existing Drupal 7-based websites (and subsequent
versions of Drupal). Additional responsibilities include module implementation, web application
development, troubleshooting, security patching, contributing ideas and efforts toward internal
projects, and working as part of a team to find solutions to communications challenges overall. This
position will also manage the web and hosting vendor relationships supporting this role.
Design, develop, modify, debug and evaluate static web content management system and hosting
system and/or vendor services for functional areas.
2. Analyze existing programs or works to formulate new systems, devices procedures, prepares
flowcharting, performs coding, data analysis, and tests/debugs programs through the application of
professional programming concepts.
Gather, analyze, prepare and summarize recommendations for approval of system and programming.
Recommend and implements changes in development, maintenance and system standards.
Understand industry practices and department policies and procedures relating to work assignments.
Perform complex data modeling, performance and integration testing and builds screens for a variety
of internal and external constituents.
Provide analysis for the use complex relational databases.
Develop and executes moderately complex test plans as well as developing conversion and system
implementation plans.
Train users in conversion and implementation of system.
Required Qualifications
Requires knowledge of other related areas of IT such as hosting
Requires advanced skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation
Has skills needed to develop conversion and system implementation plans
Extensive Drupal 7 experience or combined Drupal experience with a comparable PHP content
management system (such as Wordpress or Joomla)
Thorough knowledge of programming and style sheet languages such as PHP, MySQL, HTML and CSS
Thorough knowledge of responsive design principals and best practices
Thorough knowledge of WSC accessibility standards
Experience integrating open source and third-測party applications into existing systems
Ability to translate Illustrator and Photoshop files into fully realized and functional web interfaces
Skills in diagramming, wire測framing and using design tools
Experience assisting with end-測user support needs and perform troubleshooting and issue resolution
3. Experience taking active ownership and accountability for all assigned projects through final delivery,
meeting all timeline milestones and delivering within the approved budgets
Has communication and interpersonal skills. Must be able to communicate technical information in a
clear and concise manner, including the ability to interact with cross-測functional teams to ensure
complete delivery of web applications Requires interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical
and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization
Must be self-motivated and able to work independently or as part of a team, to learn quickly and meet
deadlines
Skilled at developing and implementing original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solving
problems
Ability to be forward thinking to keep abreast on the latest communications technology.
Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with institutional processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for web
communications, including campus style guides and web standards
Experience working in higher education, government or nonprofit environment.
