The book I choose was ‘The Prisoner of Zenda’ written by Anthony Hope. This book was
originally published in 1894 by J. W Arrowsmith.
I choose this book because ‘The Prisoner of Zenda’ is one of the most enjoyable books to
settle down with and read cover to cover. The main character was rather laid-back personality and
endearing humour guides the reader through an adventure story of political intrigue and
swashbuckling fun. Since the book that I read was the simplified version, the English used to be quite
understandable. ‘The Prisoner of Zenda’ is a Victorian Arthurian romance-historical novel. Since
reading this kind of genre is my biased, I was really looking forward to it.
The language used by Anthony Hope was descriptive language and written from the third
person point of view. Rudolf Rassendyll narrated the tale of his adventures in Ruritania. ‘We galloped
on. We seemed to be holding our own. We had entered the outskirts of the forest of Zenda, and the
trees, closing in behind us as the track zigged and zagged,’ P41
The novel is non-putdown able as it is fast-paced, lucid and witty. The descriptions of the beauty of
Ruritania help me to escape to a land of fantasy and romance. ‘The great trees enlaced with one
another over my head, and the sunshine stole through in patches as bright as diamonds and hardly
bigger..’ P17
A character that sticks in my head is Rudolf Rassendyll, the main character. He was bold
enough to impersonate King Rudolf V in order to save the throne from be taken away by people who
against King Rudolf V so much, especially Duke Micheal. ‘For me, I sat down in an armchair, and as
I sat there, half dazed, Josef clipped and scraped me till my moustache and imperial were things of the
past and my face was as bare as the King's. And when Fritz saw me thus he drew a long breath and
exclaimed:—‘ P27.
On several occasions, he risked his life to save the King even though he did not have any special
military training or skills to use weapons.
A major theme of this novel is love and honour. This is more like Rudolf Rassendyll who fell
in love with Princess Flavia, but at the same time realized that her duty to serve her country was more
important than their love. This showed his sense of honour. ‘To uphold the Crown and beat Black
Michael— that was his one resolve. Flavia, myself—ay, and the real King in Zenda, were pieces in
his game; and pawns have no business with passions.’ P73.
His sense of honour made him felt guilty for he was not the real king. In the end, both Princess Flavia
and Rudolf Rassendyll agreed to part for, to them honour was more important than their love.
After reading many different kinds of romance novels and love stories, it was refreshing to
come across an old fashioned tale that celebrated love for its purity, and a hero whose love was
absolutely selfless. This book filled with adventure, romance, mystery, humour and a generally quirky
nature. What is not to love? The Prisoner of Zenda is one of the most enjoyable books to settle down
with and read cover to cover. This book was actually better than I thought it was going to be. There
was a lot of fighting and a bit of romance. While the men were a bit feminine that did not stop them
from fighting and killing to defend the women they love. There is great talk of honour and loyalty
which are some of my favourite topics.

Book Report : The Prisoner Of Zenda

  • 1. The book I choose was ‘The Prisoner of Zenda’ written by Anthony Hope. This book was originally published in 1894 by J. W Arrowsmith. I choose this book because ‘The Prisoner of Zenda’ is one of the most enjoyable books to settle down with and read cover to cover. The main character was rather laid-back personality and endearing humour guides the reader through an adventure story of political intrigue and swashbuckling fun. Since the book that I read was the simplified version, the English used to be quite understandable. ‘The Prisoner of Zenda’ is a Victorian Arthurian romance-historical novel. Since reading this kind of genre is my biased, I was really looking forward to it. The language used by Anthony Hope was descriptive language and written from the third person point of view. Rudolf Rassendyll narrated the tale of his adventures in Ruritania. ‘We galloped on. We seemed to be holding our own. We had entered the outskirts of the forest of Zenda, and the trees, closing in behind us as the track zigged and zagged,’ P41 The novel is non-putdown able as it is fast-paced, lucid and witty. The descriptions of the beauty of Ruritania help me to escape to a land of fantasy and romance. ‘The great trees enlaced with one another over my head, and the sunshine stole through in patches as bright as diamonds and hardly bigger..’ P17 A character that sticks in my head is Rudolf Rassendyll, the main character. He was bold enough to impersonate King Rudolf V in order to save the throne from be taken away by people who against King Rudolf V so much, especially Duke Micheal. ‘For me, I sat down in an armchair, and as I sat there, half dazed, Josef clipped and scraped me till my moustache and imperial were things of the past and my face was as bare as the King's. And when Fritz saw me thus he drew a long breath and exclaimed:—‘ P27. On several occasions, he risked his life to save the King even though he did not have any special military training or skills to use weapons. A major theme of this novel is love and honour. This is more like Rudolf Rassendyll who fell in love with Princess Flavia, but at the same time realized that her duty to serve her country was more important than their love. This showed his sense of honour. ‘To uphold the Crown and beat Black Michael— that was his one resolve. Flavia, myself—ay, and the real King in Zenda, were pieces in his game; and pawns have no business with passions.’ P73. His sense of honour made him felt guilty for he was not the real king. In the end, both Princess Flavia and Rudolf Rassendyll agreed to part for, to them honour was more important than their love. After reading many different kinds of romance novels and love stories, it was refreshing to come across an old fashioned tale that celebrated love for its purity, and a hero whose love was absolutely selfless. This book filled with adventure, romance, mystery, humour and a generally quirky nature. What is not to love? The Prisoner of Zenda is one of the most enjoyable books to settle down with and read cover to cover. This book was actually better than I thought it was going to be. There was a lot of fighting and a bit of romance. While the men were a bit feminine that did not stop them from fighting and killing to defend the women they love. There is great talk of honour and loyalty which are some of my favourite topics.
