The aim of the project was to design a complete and fully functioning engineering system for a deep sea ocean-going vessel with
regards to delivering a finished product that satisfied the requirements of the client in compatibility, economically and met the
regulations and standards of international governing bodies.
 Developed my own design from planning stage through to a final delivered design with breakdown of components selected
 Researched material costs and compatibility through quantitative and qualitative data gained directly from liaising with
manufacturers and personnel within the marine and mechanical engineering industry
 Carried out an economic analysis and NPV (net present value) for the entire project
 Developed proficiency in engineering design of established systems while taking into account the potential safety hazards
and operability problems
 Gained an understanding of the economic aspects involved with engineering and maintaining systems in the long term.

SECOND ENGINEER OFFICER NORTH STAR SHIPPING MAY 2014 - PRESENT
Responsible to the Chief Engineer as a Watch-keeper in full control of the ship's main
and auxiliary propulsion systems in a shift pattern of 6 hours on/off on an ERRV
(Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel). This position requires self motivation and to
use my own initiative in many varying engineering situations and operations. I am
required to be trained to OPITO standards in medical aid and Fast Rescue Craft Boatman
roles, a position I have enjoyed immensely as it is in total contrast to my day-to-day duties as an engineer.
Duties & Responsibilities
 Preparing and operating propulsion machinery and auxiliary systems under standby situations
 Duty watch-keeping supervision and processing of operations data
 Managing the safety of myself and others through safe and correct working practice
 Carrying out risk assessments and drawing up Permits to Work in order to ensure a safe and controlled working
environment
 Member of a FRC rescue team when emergencies arise
 Working within a planned maintenance framework and assisting with audits on-site
 Carrying out mechanical fitting or hot-work where required
 Operation of electrical plant and any associated maintenance

Watch-keeping Engineer in UMS conditions on one of their 'L' Class Container vessels. In
this role I worked as part of a team on larger scale projects and gained first-hand
experience of major overhauls on large slow-speed engines. I gained invaluable
experience and knowledge that aided my confidence and skills.

 Preparing and operating propulsion machinery for port arrival and departure manoeuvring
 Maintaining purification, air compression and freshwater cooling pumping plant
 Monitoring of running systems and processes and interpreting this information for daily records
 Managing the safety of myself and others in workplace, and adapting this to ever-changing situations
 Preparing fuel bunkering lines for taking on large quantities of fluids and monitoring the operation as the Person in Change
through to job completion
 Performing complex calculations for measuring and moving volumes of fluids
 Managing the transferral of fluids throughout their corresponding systems
 Preparing lines for the transferral of sludge to shore and overseeing the process as the Person in Charge
 Research and planning of all tasks ahead of all work commencing

I undertook a 3 year cadetship through Clyde Marine Training to obtain an Engineer Officer
of the Watch III/1 certification based at City of Glasgow College. In order to be eligible to
attain my Certificate of Competency my studies were combined with 6 months of hands-on
