Literature is anything printed or written that expresses ideas, feelings, and experiences. It reflects the culture of people across time and place. Philippine literature has evolved with influences from colonization. During pre-colonial times, indigenous works were orally transmitted and included riddles, poems, and chants. The Spanish introduced Christian themes and the Roman alphabet. Filipino writers emerged expressing nationalism. American rule saw new literary forms like short stories. Today, Philippine literature reflects contemporary themes through various mediums and continues to evolve.

It explains that understanding the historical period and events of the time a work was written provides important context for readers. It encourages reflecting on how social, economic, political and cultural forces of the era may have influenced the work. The document then outlines different perspectives - like Marxism, feminism, queer theory and postcolonialism - that can be applied to analyze how issues of class, gender, race and power are addressed in a text. This document provides an overview of three major literary theories: moral-philosophical, historical-biographical, and feminist. It explains that literary theories are approaches used to understand literature by focusing on specific elements. For each theory, it outlines the main ideas and gives examples of the types of questions asked and potential topics when applying that theory to analyze a text. The document concludes by reminding readers that multiple theories can be used and that theories are suggestive lenses rather than rules.
This document discusses how to analyze literary texts through their biographical and sociocultural contexts. It provides strategies for examining an author's life experiences and beliefs to better understand their work. Readers are also encouraged to consider the historical period a text was written in and how social, economic and political factors of that time may have influenced the work. Historical scholarship aims to understand phenomena as part of history. Since the 1980s, literary departments have taken a historicist approach, analyzing topics through a historical lens. This includes challenging the text/context distinction and answering historical questions with literary evidence. Historicism has influenced assumptions about periodization and examining authorship, canons, and literature's role in human culture. The author was traditionally central to literary study but has been deemphasized through new historicist approaches that analyze the author as a discursive construction rather than sovereign subject.

When I first compiled this dossier and submitted it to the Aztl叩n editorial
board, they observed something that I had more or less taken for granted: a
pattern across the essays of opening with meaningful personal experiences
and using these as sources for social and political theorization. I appreci-
ate this observation because it helps to make clear something that I have
practiced for years but had not thought to explain. Without exception, the
contributors to this dossier are indebted to the legacies of feminist activism
and theory of the 1960s and 1970s. The feminist slogan the personal is
political, which originated during this period, seems almost to be a clich辿
these days, but within most traditional academic fields it is still a profound
challenge to business as usual. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, it became
common for scholars to include cursory personal anecdotes to demystify
the status of the anonymous author or to briefly reflect on ones position
of privilege in relation to ones subject matter. What was rarely done thor-
oughly in academic publications, however, was the work performed by the
original feminist theorists who gave substance to the slogan: women like
Audre Lorde (1984), Cherr鱈e Moraga (1983), Adrienne Rich (1980), and
Gloria Anzald炭a (1987). These women didnt merely situate themselves
in relation to their subject. They dared to claim that their personal experi-
encesof serving their brothers at home, of experiencing violence at the
hands of men, of desiring other women, of being cast out by their own
peoplewere political subjects worthy of theorization. These experiences
could be the starting point for theory, and their own personal responses to
them were, in fact, theory.

The objective of this study is to focus on the investigation of William Shakespeares Macbeth and Doris Lessings The Grass Is Singing in the perspective of alienation and feminism. It aims at examining mainly Shakespeares and Lessings treatment of women in the light of the social system of 16th -century England and 20th -century Africa, respectively. It proposes to incorporate a wide variety of related, but diverse and even contradictory elements, centering on the subject of gender, social, political, economic, and cultural issues, fragmentation of society, love and marriage, psychological conflict, divorce, and sexuality. Both Shakespeares and Lessings texts are analyzed within the parameters of these issues. It throws a new light on the critical comments made by critics, scholars, and reviewers with a view to analyzing the complex ramifications of the theory of alienation and feminism. It also attempts to examine outlooks, autobiographical elements, writing forms, similarities and differences in various phases of the two writers. In this way, it aims to prove a concluding remark that a symbiotic relationship of the theorists and the authors is not only self-perpetuating, but also important for the 21st -century English literature.
