Brazil is hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which is the main reason the author plans to visit this year. Brazil has a diverse landscape and climate, ranging from the Amazon rainforest to beaches along the Atlantic coast. Some top destinations to visit are S達o Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Iguazu Falls. Brazil does not have a prime minister and Portuguese is the dominant language, though some indigenous languages are still spoken.
The Portuguese were the first European settlers to arrive in Brazil in 1500 led by Pedro Cabral. They found around seven million native Indians living in tribes with rich cultural lives but also tribal warfare and cannibalism. Other Portuguese explorers followed Cabral in search of trade goods. In the early colonial period, the Portuguese focused on subsistence agriculture rather than territorial expansion. Gold was discovered in the interior in the 1690s but did not last. In 1807, the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil due to Napoleon and established it as the capital of the Portuguese empire, though it gained independence in 1821. In the 19th century, coffee replaced sugar as the main export and attracted European immigrants, establishing Brazil as a republic in
Belo Horizonte is the capital of the state of Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil. It has a population of over 2 million people and was planned and built in the late 19th century to serve as the new capital. The city is known for its green spaces and cultural activities. It will host matches at the 62,547 seat Mineir達o stadium, one of Brazil's most historic soccer venues and home to top clubs Atl辿tico Mineiro and Cruzeiro. Belo Horizonte has a tropical climate and robust economy centered around tourism, commerce, and industry.
South America is the southern portion of the Americas, located south of North America. It has a population of over 385 million people and covers an area of over 6.8 million square miles. Some key facts:
- It was named after Amerigo Vespucci and includes 12 independent countries and French Guiana.
- It has a rapidly developing economy focused on industries like agriculture, fishing, resources and manufacturing. Countries like Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Chile have particularly large economies.
- The dominant religion is Roman Catholicism and the most widely spoken language is Portuguese, especially in Brazil which has the largest economy in South America.
Mathematics of Incidence, part 1: Getting Started with Collaborative FilteringBenjamin Keller
油
Incidence relations are a ubiquitous form of data, and this presentation begins an exploration of their analysis. Using a simple collaborative filtering scheme over data represented as a bipartite graph of users and foods they like, the presentation is meant as an approachable introduction to the basic ideas of Formal Concept analysis.
[際際滷s for presentation to STEAM Vent Meetup on Jan 8th, 2015.] Presents a (somewhat fictional) progression of ideas using graphs to analyze data, and how blindly following this progression leads to failed analysis because we did not consider supporting human reasoning as an end goal. Audience is general math and science knowledgeable group.

Third in a growing series using a simple Collaborative Filtering example to explore elements of formal concept analysis and lattice theory in analysis of incidence data. In these slides, we learn a little more about concept lattices, answer the mystery of the doughnuts for Abby, and by looking at recommendations frame a new question about dependencies.
Mathematics of Incidence (part 4): Lattice dependenciesBenjamin Keller
油
Motivated by a simple example of collaborative filtering from previous presentations, we look at what it means to be dependent and independent in formal concept analysis, and what the limitations are for deciding how "strong" a dependency might be. Along the way, we catch a glimmer of how association rules arise from the concept lattice, and get a hint that we might need some information theory.

For five years, I was attached to one of these centers hosted at U.Michigan where scientists and computational experts were engaged in large projects attempting to explain complex phenomena in human disease by integrating the analysis of data and domain information. Rather than talk about the scientific success of this grand effort, I will discuss lessons from this experience that can guide us as we build our skills as data scientists and help others understand their data.

Continuing the tale of Abby and doughnuts from part 1, this presentation shifts terminology and notation into formal concept analysis, and introduces lattice ideals and filters that allow us to better describe what's going on with collaborative filtering.

History
8. Government
Brazil has a civilian
President democratically
elected. The bicameral
legislative system is
composed of the
National Congress and
the Senate. These two
houses hold different
levels of political
representatives: state
and national.
Currency
The REAL is the national currency
and its approximate quotation is
R$3.50 to US$1.00
9. Language
Portuguese is the national
language yet it has quite a
different accent from the one
spoken in Portugal and in other
former Portuguese colonies.
People
Brazilians descend from a mixture of races. Portuguese settlers, native
peoples, African slaves, and French and Dutch settlers who tried to
conquer the northeast of the country. In the XX Century, German,
Italian, Polish and Japanese immigrants added new elements to that
mixture.
Brazil is likely the most racially-mixed culture of our time.
10. Family
Brazilians are very affectionate
and outgoing. Family ties are
strong and parents tend to be
overprotective of their children,
especially of girls. For example,
teenage girls often have earlier
curfews than teenage boys of the
same age.
Supervising children and caring
for household is normally the
wifes responsibility while
husbands are busy with work.
Parents expect to know when
their children are going out,
where they are going and usually
a curfew is set.
11. Religion
Brazil is a Catholic country and yet
religious openness prevails. Theres a
variety of faith but theres also great
respect for its own syncretism. This is
probably what provides Brazilians with
greater tolerance and a broader sense of
religious practices.
The staples of the Brazilian diet are arroz (white
rice), feij達o (beans), and farofa (manioc flour), also
called farinha. These are usually served with carne
(beef), carne de porco (pork), frango (chicken), or
peixe (fish) and a lettuce and tomato salad
Feijoada, the national dish is a meat and bean stew
served with rice. Barbecued meat is very popular
and traditional foods also include African-influenced
fish and chicken stews.

12. Climate
Brazil is by far the largest country in South
America. Its size is 8,5 million km2 and most
of it lies within tropical climate.
Temperatures and vegetation varies quite a
lot in relationship to the altitude of the cities.
The seasons are exactly the opposite from
those in the Northern Hemisphere except in
the North of the country where its climate is
Equatorial .
The average annual temperature is
approximately 28尊C/83F尊 in the North and
20尊C/68F尊 in the South.
Temperatures may drop below freezing in the
South whilst in Rio de Janeiro for instance,
in the middle of the summer it may reach
40尊C/105F尊 during several days.
13. Sports
Brazilian fondness for sports, in general
and for soccer, in particular, is shown
by the existence of some 8,000 sports
clubs throughout the country. No other
sport in Brazil can compare in
popularity to soccer, which Brazilians
call futebol. This passion for the sport
is reflected in the number and size of
soccer stadiums all over the country.
The Maracan達 Stadium, built in Rio de
Janeiro for the 1950 World Cup is the
largest in the world with a capacity for
200,000 seats.
14. Carnival is a moveable feast that is tied to the
religious Calendar and is celebrated all over the
country. It is a traditional pre-Lenten celebration
which ends on Ash Wednesday.
Carnival activities around Brazil normally take
place from the Friday prior to Ash Wednesday
and continue up to an including Ash Wednesday
itself. Most Brazilian offices and business will
close for the Carnival week in much the same
way companies in many parts of the world close
between Christmas and the New Years Eve.
Carnival
15. Brazil
Brazil is divided into 5
regions:
North (green color);
Northeast (orange);
Mid-West (blue);
Southeast (yellow);
South (red).
16. North Region
Encompasses the states
of Acre, Amazonas.
Rondonia,Roraima,
Amap叩, Tocantins and
Par叩. This is the countrys
most exotic region. Its
nature at its best;
exuberant, lively, a true
tourists paradise. The
Amazon Rainforest covers
six million km2. There you
will find the worlds
greatest diversity in flora
and fauna.
17. Northeast Region
Embraces the states of Alagoas, Bahia,
Cear叩, Fernando de Noronha Island,
Maranh達o, Para鱈ba, Pernambuco, Piau鱈,
Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe. This
regions heritage stems from a melting pot
of cultures with African predominance yet
native peoples, Portuguese, Dutch and
French immigrants added their own flavors
as well. As a result, this area is rich in
folklore, handicrafts, and Capoeira, an
African fight-dance. The coastal region is
fertile and has some of the most beautiful
beaches of Brazil.
18. Mid-West Region
Composed by the states of Goi叩s,
Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul
and the District Capital - Bras鱈lia.
The Mid-West is a region of
contrasts. There are signs of both
the oldest and the most recent
stages of the country's settlement.
The region also presents the
exuberant Araguaia River next to
one of the most fascinating Wildlife
Parks in the world - the Pantanal
Marshlands.
19. Southeast Region
Embraces the states of: Esp鱈rito Santo, Minas
Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and S達o Paulo.
Brazils main port of entry to visitors from all over
the world the Southeast is a region of strong
contrasts from the richest to the poorest. It has it
all: beaches, mountains, farmlands, and the
country卒s largest metropolis: Rio de Janeiro and
S達o Paulo.
The most populous of the five regions, the
Southeast is also the most industrialized part of
the country.
20. South Region
Composed of the states of Paran叩,
Rio Grande do Sul and Santa
Catarina. Brazil's Southern region lies
to the South of the Tropic of
Capricorn. It is the only region in
Brazil where all the seasons are
clearly defined. The winter is cool and
snow might even be seen in some
towns. The South is famous for its
beautiful secluded beaches, different
from the tropical beaches of other
regions and for the Iguass炭 Falls. A
large number of European immigrants
- especially Germans and Italians -
settled in the region towards the end
of the 19th Century.
