1) Lean thinking and quality improvement methods can help healthcare organizations significantly improve patient care by eliminating waste and creating smooth flow through value streams.
2) Implementing lean requires redesigning patient journeys through departments and across the entire care continuum to reduce waits, handoffs, and unnecessary steps for both patients and staff.
3) Sustaining lean transformations requires establishing stability, responding quickly to problems, and designing experiments through visual management systems and a value stream leader responsible for coordination and conflict resolution across the organization.
1. The document outlines various capacity and demand management strategies for service organizations, including smoothing demand through appointment scheduling, offering price incentives, and promoting off-peak demand.
2. It also discusses managing queues, including partitioning demand, establishing price incentives, and developing reservation systems. Common problems with queues like no-shows and strategies to address them are outlined.
3. Different queuing models are presented to aid in capacity planning, including factors like arrival processes, queue configurations, and service times.
This document discusses lessons learned from applying lean principles in three healthcare systems. It emphasizes using a scientific approach to diagnose and solve organizational problems, developing capabilities through hands-on problem solving rather than just training, making work visible through value stream mapping and management, focusing efforts on key priorities and experiments, and continually learning from experiments and customer feedback.

This document provides an introduction to Lean management principles and techniques for healthcare professionals. It discusses how Lean originated at Toyota and has been successfully applied in healthcare. The objectives are to understand Lean thinking, value stream mapping, and identifying waste. Examples of waste in healthcare are presented, as well as everyday Lean tools like daily huddles, visual management boards, standard work, Pareto analysis, and 5 Whys that can be started immediately. An example success story from an ambulatory endoscopy suite is also provided.
The document discusses strategies and solutions for accountable care organizations (ACOs) to improve patient outcomes and lower costs. It proposes an ACO Optimization Toolkit and ACO-ASK decision support system that use techniques like predictive modeling, text mining, and machine learning. Revenue projections show consulting revenues growing from $53 million in 2012 to over $200 million by 2018 as more ACOs adopt the solutions. The goal is to help providers succeed under new reimbursement models that emphasize quality and value over volume.
The document outlines different components of a patient care flow for chronic pain treatment, including electronic health records, fluid synchronization pumps and services, hospitals that provide treatment, and pain clinics. It also shows the related value chain, with CPT reimbursement for the pump and surgical kit, hospital reimbursement, and the company Fluid Synchrony that provides the product and services.

Patient flow refers to the movement of patients through the healthcare system. Slow patient flow can negatively impact quality of care and increase costs. When patient flow slows down, more patients are at risk of dying from delays in treatment or medical errors. It also increases costs due to longer lengths of stay, increased use of expensive hospital resources, and less efficient use of staff time. Improving patient flow requires considering the entire patient journey, separating elective and emergency care streams, eliminating unnecessary variability, and ensuring capacity matches demand.

The document discusses using OpenERP in healthcare and proposes several building blocks needed, including call center functionality, clinical governance, treatment planning, staff rostering, budgeting, and service bills of materials. It emphasizes the importance of open standards and discusses additional requirements from the perspective of patient management and records. The building blocks discussed would also be essential for OpenERP in other service sectors beyond just healthcare.
This document outlines a blueprint for building operational excellence through a systematic, step-by-step process. It involves aligning strategy, deploying a value stream approach to improvement, and implementing a rhythm of rapid improvement events to drive sustainable results. Key elements include leadership involvement, dedicated resources, engaging the workforce, and measuring progress to optimize processes from order to cash.
This document discusses implementing lean processes at a hospital to improve performance. It outlines objectives like achieving JCI re-accreditation, increasing throughput, and improving the patient and staff experience. The document describes collecting initial data, identifying bottlenecks, and co-creating solutions. It also outlines establishing leadership support, core and department teams, and implementing best practices to build capacity and sustain initiatives through review and monitoring. The overall aim is to enhance the hospital's operations and service delivery through lean methodology.

This document outlines the 5 phases of turning around a failing project: Recognize, Analyze, Stabilize, Transform, and Sustain. It discusses each phase in detail, providing tools and approaches for dealing with each stage of a project turnaround. Some key points include recognizing early warning signs, focusing on the root cause not just symptoms, establishing a core team, adjusting scope/schedule/quality, and sustaining the turnaround once achieved through lessons learned and establishing new processes. The overall message is that project turnarounds require engaging stakeholders, focusing on people, and consistent project management without excuses.
Vinay Bansal is a procurement consultant and supply chain advisor based in Bangalore, India. He has work experience with several large Indian companies. He obtained his master's degree in business administration with a focus on finance. Bansal is interested in discussing topics related to procurement, sourcing, and spend management. He believes organizations should think beyond boundaries and standard solutions to manage costs and drive savings through strategic sourcing and spend management practices. Key factors for reducing spend include automating processes, leveraging spend data, and conducting business intelligence activities to identify opportunities and mitigate risks.
Tantri & Associates, LLC is a consulting firm located in Simsbury, Connecticut that provides creative and innovative solutions to business problems through process management, outsourcing, shared services, internal controls, and actuarial studies. The firm aims to enhance clients' margins through superior service and attention to detail while drawing on both American and Indian business perspectives. The document discusses the value of analytics in healthcare. It argues that healthcare organizations have large amounts of data from various sources like EMRs, finance systems, and other clinical and administrative systems. However, this data is often underutilized. The author proposes using a healthcare enterprise intelligence framework to extract, transform, and load this data into a centralized data warehouse where it can be integrated, standardized, and made available for analysis. This would allow healthcare leaders to better understand their operations and make more informed decisions using business intelligence tools like OLAP cubes, dashboards, and reports. The goal is to improve outcomes by personalizing care based on past patient data and evidence.

Combined motion of GH and ST joint of shoulder complex helps in:
Distribution of motion between other two joints.

Maintenance of good length tension
Although some amount of glenohumeral motion may occur while the other shoulder articulations remain stabilized, movement of the humerus more commonly involves some movement at all three shoulder joints.

1. THE POTENTIAL OF LEAN
THINKING IN HEALTHCARE
Daniel T Jones
Chairman
Lean Enterprise
Academy
UK
2. Background
LEA has helped many organisations get big benefits
from following Toyota in using Lean thinking
Consumer goods, construction and the public sector
I brought the global lean healthcare pioneers together to
encourage others to follow them
We conducted our own action learning experiments to
learn how lean works in healthcare
We published our results so far in Making Hospitals
Work so others can do it themselves
Now we are learning how to build the right management
systems to sustain lean
3. The Healthcare Challenge
The healthcare industry was shocked to discover how far
behind they had fallen on quality and safety
Used evidence based medicine to define best practice
interventions to eliminate variation and errors
But these improvements are difficult to sustain in isolation
Meanwhile containing healthcare costs is a growing issue
Lean uses evidence based management to improve the
flow of work to eliminate delays for patients, wasted effort
for staff and unnecessary costs for hospitals
If we can go beyond point improvements and lean pilots
4. Coming Together
Quality and Lean are two sides of a coin together they:
Use the scientific method for prioritizing, planning
and problem solving
Use lean principles and tools to turn activities into
value streams (integrated patient journeys)
Manage visually to establish stability, see variances
and reveal problems
Develop problem solving skills through learning by
doing
But the end-to-end perspective challenges traditional
ways of managing
