Alexander Pounds observed 6 different stores - Whole Foods, Walmart, Kroger, Home Depot, Moe's Southwest Grill, and Yeah! Burger - and analyzed aspects of each store that contribute to the customer experience. Some key factors that came up across multiple stores were automatic doors and organized entryways, pleasant smells and aesthetics, cleanliness, intuitive layouts, signage, music, and engaged, helpful staff. Pounds concluded that developing a positive atmosphere through lighting, temperature, and security, as well as making customers feel welcome, are important for a good shopping experience.
People are getting less sleep due to excessive use of technology in bed. Connectivity through mobile devices accounts for 90% of internet usage, allowing people to browse on their phones late into the night instead of sleeping. Banning mobile devices from the bedroom is proposed to help disturb this trend and allow for better sleep, though some may resist due to dependency on phones for alarms or connectivity. If followed, this could result in less media usage at bedtime and more time spent sleeping.

This document summarizes a student's final project for a perception class. It discusses the key components of perception, including the four main parts of the perceptual process: stimulus, electricity, experience and action, and knowledge. It also describes how technologies like PET scans and MRIs can show brain activity during perception. The student's favorite part of the class covered inattentional blindness and optical illusions like the Ponzo illusion. To demonstrate this, the student took photos of sneakers on railroad tracks to show how size perception can be manipulated. The student concluded they now have a new perspective on their surroundings based on what they learned about perception.
This document discusses strategic intellectual property (IP) considerations for medical technology companies, including opportunities to boost growth as a small-to-medium enterprise (SME). It describes using an IP strategy to create exclusive market positions for customers by offering benefits that are distinctive, long-lasting, and legally defensible. The effects of digital transformation on business models are examined, with IP used to protect new digital elements that affect key parts of the business model and achieve competitive advantages. Examples are provided for patent strategies regarding magnetic resonance imaging under transaction-based and pay-per-use business models.

The interim assessment found that the three research PPPs (Factories of the Future, Energy-efficient Buildings, and Green Cars Initiative) have been successful in engaging industry and research organizations. However, to significantly impact European competitiveness, longer term support and increased funding are needed. The PPPs established closer cooperation between the EC and industry but processes need further streamlining. While the PPPs focus on pre-competitive research, supporting activities related to commercializing innovations could better address industrial needs. Dissemination also needs strengthening to engage more SMEs.

World Information Architecture Day 2025 - UX at a CrossroadsJoshua Randall

User Experience stands at a crossroads: will we live up to our potential to design a better world? or will we be co-opted by ¡°product management¡± or another business buzzword?
Looking backwards, this talk will show how UX has repeatedly failed to create a better world, drawing on industry data from Nielsen Norman Group, Baymard, MeasuringU, WebAIM, and others.
Looking forwards, this talk will argue that UX must resist hype, say no more often and collaborate less often (you read that right), and become a true profession ¡ª in order to be able to design a better world.

Formal Methods: Whence and Whither? [Martin Fr?nzle Festkolloquium, 2025]Jonathan Bowen
?
Alan Turing arguably wrote the first paper on formal methods 75 years ago. Since then, there have been claims and counterclaims about formal methods. Tool development has been slow but aided by Moore¡¯s Law with the increasing power of computers. Although formal methods are not widespread in practical usage at a heavyweight level, their influence as crept into software engineering practice to the extent that they are no longer necessarily called formal methods in their use. In addition, in areas where safety and security are important, with the increasing use of computers in such applications, formal methods are a viable way to improve the reliability of such software-based systems. Their use in hardware where a mistake can be very costly is also important. This talk explores the journey of formal methods to the present day and speculates on future directions.
