Erica Zigelman, a New York City
school principal, graduated from New
York University with a bachelors
degree in education, and continued at
the school to obtain a masters
degree. Since 1979, Erica Zigelman
has served as principal in the New
York City Department of Education.

The New York City Department of Education
is continuing its push to improve the citys
education system. Representatives from the
department recently met with school officials
in the Bronxalong with more than 120
community members and parentsto
announce a shift in the systems disciplinary
policies, moving from a punitive position to an
approach based on restorative justice. Last
year schools in the Bronx saw a 24% decline
in suspensions when compared to the 20112012 school year, in addition to a 59%
reduction in in-school arrests.
Conclusion


The departments initiatives have proven to
be successful over recent years. New York
City mayor Michael Bloomberg recently
acknowledged efforts made by the New York
City Department of Education as a large part
of the citys current 66% graduation rate, an
all-time high for the city. This
annmouncement occurred at the Salome
Urena Educational Campus where Middle
School 322 resides. Following the press
conference, the principals were gathered for
a photo opportunity with the
Chancellor, Dennis Walcott and Mayor
Michael Bloomberg.
