- 1. 1. Through my analysis of the organizational structure of the work and community engagements that the FCC does, it ensures sustainability and a focus on fixing the root issues of problems. 2. Non-profits that engage with communities of largely working-class, immigrants and people of color should ensure that their analysis of community engagement emphasizes the root problems and utilizes the tactic of grassroots organizing and direct services to best engage with the community. 3. The Haas Center should establish a concrete relationship with the FCC for future internship placements to engage in sustainable service. Each part of the internship cultivated three primary results: 1. Direct service is not a reformatory solution, but is critical in addressing the communitys needs 2. Education and grassroots organizing is key to systemic change a. Each staff member belongs to a grassroots organization separate from their career as a nonprofit worker 3. Organizations working on problems should always be guided by their analysis of the root problems a. The FCC focuses on the three problems of U.S. imperialism, the Philippines bureaucratic capitalism and feudalism The Filipino Community Center: Exploring the systemic framework of a nonprofit and grassroots organization Ian Carlo Macato, Class of 2019, Community Service Work Study (CSWS) Internship 1: Background & Community Partner 1. What framework does a culturally competent non-profit utilize? 2. How does a non-profit balance their role between direct services and grassroots organizing? The internship program structure focuses on four distinct areas and my analysis explored how they created the framework and organizing philosophy of the FCC. 1. Educational discussions Labor Export Policy of the Philippines Wage Theft Cases in San Francisco Philippine Society and Revolution Womens Orientation in Philippine Society 3. Grassroots organizing partnerships National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON) GABRIELA-SF Disaster Support Network for the Philippines Pilipino Association of Workers and Immigrants 4. Community immersion Talakayan on President Duterte (Community Forum) Partnerships with organizations in the neighborhood The Filipino Community Center (FCC) serves to provide a space where Filipinx families can access services and hold activities. The Excelsior neighborhood has the second highest population of Filipinx people in San Francisco who are mostly low-income, working class immigrants. The vision of the FCC rests on the values of paninindigan, where people actively work for a just society; pakikipagkapwa, where individuals can realize their full human potential regardless of age, race, religion, nationality, gender and sexual orientation; bayanihan, where people work collectively in building strong communities; and pakikibaka where all people have decision making power in their lives and in the larger society.
