Round robin & ladder types of tournaments

A round robin tournament schedule allows each team to play every other team. This format is fair because all opponents get to play each other. The number of games in a round robin is calculated as N(N-1)/2, where N is the number of teams. Ties are broken by applying the "win-over-the-other" rule or comparing score differentials when teams are tied.

The SWWE Regional Network were very pleased to welcome Aalok Sonawala, Head of PMO, National Programmes, Rider Levett Bucknall on 26 February, to BAWA for our first face to face event of 2025. Aalok is a member of APMs Thames Valley Regional Network and also speaks to members of APMs PMO Interest Network, which aims to facilitate collaboration and learning, offer unbiased advice and guidance.
Tonight, Aalok planned to discuss the importance of a PMO within project-based organisations, the different types of PMO and their key elements, PMO governance and centres of excellence.
PMOs within an organisation can be centralised, hub and spoke with a central PMO with satellite PMOs globally, or embedded within projects. The appropriate structure will be determined by the specific business needs of the organisation. The PMO sits above PM delivery and the supply chain delivery teams.

- 2. ROUND ROBIN is a common type of tournament
- 3. schedule among team sports such as: BASKETBALL VOLLEYBALL SOFTBALL BASEBALL etc.
- 4. provides the opportunity for each competing team to play against every other team.
- 5. round robin is very fair method of determining the winner because of all opponents can
- 6. get to play against each other.
- 7. Is derived from the French term ruban, meaning ribbon
- 8. After some time, the term was changed to robin.
- 9. G = ( 1) 2 Where G no. of games
- 10. N stands for the number of TEAMS.
- 11. BREAK TIES In a ROUND ROBIN TOURNAMENT
- 12. In case of a tie between two teams, the win- over-the-other rule shall apply.
- 13. If there is a triple tie between teams, break the tie by determining
- 14. the winners and the losers when the teams meet.
- 15. Then, get the difference of the scores of each match they play.
- 16. Express all figures as absolute value. Add the difference of the scores to the winning team
- 17. and subtract the difference from the losing team.
- 18. The team with the most number of plus points will be in first place and
- 19. team with the lowest number of plus points will be in third place.
- 21. LADDER TOURNAMENTS Is commonly used in minor sports or games.
- 22. The names of participants are put on cards and placed in the slots or hung on hooks.
- 23. The participant can be seeded or randomly placed.
- 24. Once the ladder is set up, participants can advance by defeating a competitor one or two place above on the ladder.
- 25. If the challenger wins, he or she changes positions with the defeated person.
- 26. After playing the contest, the two players cannot play again until they have played against another contestant.
- 27. The players play in order of the challenges and, usually, a three-day limit
- 28. is imposed to take the challenge or else the players loses by default.
- 29. The winner is the player on the top of the ladder after the designated time period (e.g., two weeks, one month).
- 30. No one gets eliminated and a true champion can be chosen over a period of time.
- 31. The disadvantage is that the players end up competing with the same people much of the time
- 32. Which makes the tournament less exciting after a while.
- 33. This type of elimination is best used in all individual sports e.g., boxing, fencing and taekwondo.
