HIV/AIDS TRANSMISSION

At the end of this session the learners should be
able to understand:
• Strategies used to alleviate the problem of
HIV/AIDS pandemic
• Identify methods to prevent and control HIV/AIDS
transmission
• Explain the methods and their effectiveness and
limitations
• Describe reasons for slow eradication of
HIV/AIDS

Strategies used to alleviate the
problem of HIV/AIDS pandemic
Among of the strategies used to alleviate the
problem of HIV/AIDS in Tanzania and other
developing countries are the following:-

Strategies…
Mass media campaigns is playing a great part
in on HIV prevention
behavioral interventions.
• Behavioral interventions have been shown to
be capable of changing risk behaviors related
to both sexual practices and substance use in
populations of men who have sex with men

Strategies…
Education, training, and capacity building for
health care providers are also important
activities that can improve the ability of health
care providers and systems and community-
based organizations and their staff to provide
high quality HIV prevention, care, and
treatment services efficiency and effectively.

Strategies…
School-based sex education.
• School-based sex education programs, provide
information to young people and reinforce
healthy norms in a school setting.
• Students who have been exposed to school-
based sex education reviews the effectiveness
of, subsets of school-based sex education.

Strategies…
Voluntary counseling and testing.
• This intervention enables people to know
their HIV status and provides counseling
support to help them cope with the outcome.

Strategies…
Peer-based programs.
• Peer interventions programs help use
influential members of a targeted community
to disseminate information or teach specific
skills. Such interventions have generally been
found to be effective in reducing unsafe
behaviors

Strategies…
Condom promotion, distribution, and social
marketing. Condom promotion, distribution, and
social marketing has played a great role in HIV
prevention programs.
• Condom social marketing seeks to increase the
popularity of condoms using advertising and
mass media, as well as to increase access to
condoms by making them widely available to the
general public through community health
facilities, promotional events, and other
mechanisms

Strategies…
Avoiding unwanted pregnancies among
infected mothers. This help to reduce HIV
among infants is to provide better
contraception services.
Use of antiretroviral therapy.
• provision of antiretroviral drugs to infected
mothers significantly reduces vertical
transmission.

Strategies…
• The provision of antiretroviral therapy to
prevent MTCT (mother to child transmission)
is highly cost-effective, to the point of being
cost-saving for women who already know that
they are infected.

Strategies…
Feeding substitution.
• This is for avoidance of breastfeeding for HIV-
infected mothers to prevent postnatal HIV
transmission
