SWAT is a non-residential facility in Antwerp for temporarily non-schoolable pupils from secondary schools. Its mission is to support expelled pupils and help them return to education or employment. Pupils receive socio-emotional training and workshops to address disruptive behavior, truancy, demotivation or complex family situations. The program includes intake procedures, activation activities, a fort phase of workshops and lessons, and readjustment support to help pupils transition back to school. Schools donate hours to SWAT for each pupil to support their collaborative efforts.

The document discusses the lack of black entrepreneurs and investment in black communities, which has contributed to high unemployment rates and wealth gaps compared to white Americans. It argues that business incubators, accelerators, and access to capital are needed to fuel job growth and connect black talent to innovation ecosystems. However, there are very few black "angel investors" who provide start-up funding. The author concludes that black America needs to develop its own angel investors rather than relying on outside help, in order to participate fully in the 21st century innovation economy.
This document discusses two categories of reports available in the True-POS business intelligence and data analytics software: Business Intelligence Reports and Business Information Reports. Business Intelligence Reports help analyze historical and present data to inform marketing, business aggregation, and timely decision-making, and include reports on customer analysis, sales and profits, store operations, suppliers and purchases, and inventory management. Business Information Reports provide non-transactional business data and include masters, trackers, tax, and miscellaneous reports covering customers, suppliers, orders, and more.

This document describes a novel neural network classifier for brain-computer interfaces. It proposes extracting EEG features using discrete cosine transforms and preprocessing signals with two-stage filtering, including a Butterworth filter and 15-point Spencer filter. The signals would then be classified using a proposed Semi Partial Recurrent Neural Network, which is claimed to have better accuracy than conventional neural network classifiers. The document provides background on BCI systems and details on the proposed feature extraction and preprocessing methods, as well as introducing the novel classifier.

1. The document analyzes tumor size distributions in fruit flies, observing two distinct populations: microtumors from 25k-300k in size that decrease exponentially in frequency as size increases, and larger tumors from 300k-600k that are rare.
2. A dynamic simulation model described by the equation y = x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 predicts that mitosis drives initial tumor growth until an in situ genetic fitness threshold is reached.
3. This suggests that analyzing mathematical associations between tumor types could help develop more effective targeted drugs to combat brain tumor remission and improve patient outcomes and costs.
This guidance document provides information on recognition and validation of learning in volunteering. It discusses why recognition and validation are useful for volunteers, organizations, and employers. It also offers examples of tools that can be used to recognize and validate skills gained through volunteering, such as certificates, awards, testimonials, and competence assessments. Finally, it provides recommendations for organizations developing a recognition and validation strategy.
The document outlines 10 steps for volunteers to get recognition of their competences. The steps include committing to the recognition process, setting goals and targets, preparing a personal profile by reflecting on past experiences, choosing a standard to measure competences against, comparing competences to the standard, getting formal validation from an external institute, creating a development plan, implementing the plan, and continuing personal development. It also lists 10 ways organizations can support volunteers, such as providing training certificates, collecting feedback, documenting work products, gathering evidence of competences, offering portfolios, and making agreements for formal recognition with other institutes.

This document discusses the Positive Deviance approach, which identifies solutions to community problems from uncommon but successful behaviors that already exist within the community. It outlines how a Positive Deviance inquiry works by establishing norms, uncovering successful strategies of "Positive Deviants", analyzing which strategies are accessible to all community members, and focusing on replicating the behaviors rather than knowledge. The document provides an example of ICDI's Positive Deviance project in the Netherlands in 2010 that aimed to support integration of youth from minority backgrounds through mainstream leisure activities. It shares quotes from interviews and discusses important notions and a proposed "action plan" using the Positive Deviance approach.

This document outlines an experiment conducted in the Netherlands from 1995-1996 involving peer consultation and policy improvement sessions between youth and policymakers. The goals were to generate necessary information, involve youth in the policymaking process, and create conditions for jointly improving policies and their implementation. Key aspects included all participants working together equally, a structured discussion process, and the use of trained process coaches to facilitate discussion and note-taking.
This document discusses strategies for youth engagement and social change, including a leadership training program and an Action Week toolkit. The leadership training involved group dynamics, project management, and understanding social issues. Several youth leaders went on to work in social sectors after the program. However, some motivated young leaders did not find their place in existing youth centers. The Action Week toolkit is an 8-step guide to help youth groups build skills through activities like groupbuilding, listening, choosing issues, learning, planning, taking action, and celebrating accomplishments. The document acknowledges influences from theories of youth organizing and critical pedagogy.
The document summarizes the Youth Prevention Project called Trammelant run by De Lijn, the public transport company in Antwerp, Belgium. The project aims to reduce conflicts between youth passengers and transport personnel and enhance mutual understanding. Key activities include classroom discussions to gain empathy for different perspectives, activities on a retrofitted "Trammelantbus" to educate youth, and youth teaching peers what they learned. The project has led to fewer reports of nuisance and increased respect between youth and personnel on public transportation.
The document summarizes findings from the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) regarding active citizenship from an international European perspective. It examines dimensions of citizenship like civic knowledge, skills and willingness to participate in the political system, and democratic values across participating European countries. It also analyzes student participation in school and perceptions of school climate.
The document summarizes findings from the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) conducted between 2006-2010 involving over 140,000 students from 38 countries. It compares students, teachers, and schools internationally on dimensions of citizenship like civic knowledge, attitudes towards democratic values, and expected participation. It finds that countries vary in how they rate the importance of conventional citizenship behaviors like voting versus social movement behaviors. Countries also differed in areas like civic knowledge, with Nordic countries scoring highest on average.
Social inclusion policies for young people in disadvantaged neighborhoods often lead to unintended social exclusion. Young men in these areas face heavy surveillance from police and social services due to safety issues. This causes distrust of authorities and a "culture of suspicion" where young men avoid activities to prevent arrest. While governments aim to create responsible citizens, policies often do not understand these young peoples' circumstances and perspectives, and view them as problems rather than helping them develop. True social inclusion requires understanding between all groups, stable community roles, and opportunities for youth rather than just control.
The document discusses connecting youth with society and the importance of meaningful participation and inclusion of children and young people. It summarizes the evolution of children's rights from an early focus on provision rights to increasing emphasis on protection rights and later the introduction of participation rights in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. While laws and structures are important, the speaker emphasizes that a change in attitudes is also needed to establish a culture where children are accepted as co-actors in dialogue about decisions affecting them rather than seen as "not yets." Realizing children's right to participation requires ongoing effort as complaints still show how young people's input is often not taken seriously.
This document discusses youth inclusion and participation in social welfare programs. It addresses three key points:
1. Youth work provides an important forum for discussing social relations and conditions while also guiding young people's inclusion in society.
2. There is tension between viewing youth work as social work focused on socialization versus seeing it as a practice allowing youth to critically examine society.
3. An effective youth work approach navigates this tension by keeping an open forum where young people's voices are heard while also supporting their transition into social structures.

Over WCH

13. Juliana Aguilar - War Child Holland
Over mijn werk
Ik ben verantwoordelijk voor het promoten en ondersteunen van
betekenisvolle participatie binnen War Child en binnen de
samenlevingen waar we werken MET kinderen en jongeren. Participatie
