Presentation at the Digital Museum Expo in Amsterdam, about the design of innovative 3D interactive applications for museums. Integrating 3D in a museum context means also that easy interaction with 3D for a wide range of users is a must. We focus in this presentation on the design process and requirements of different types of interactive applications based on 3D digital heritage assets and how they can be applied in different museum activities.

Daniel Pletinckx gave a presentation on smart historical cities and digital cultural heritage. He discussed projects in Bologna, Cologne, and Amsterdam that used 3D modeling and virtual reconstructions to tell stories about the cities' histories. He also described the Ename archaeological park project, which reconstructed 16 periods of the city's evolution over 1000 years. Pletinckx argued that technology allows history to be experienced outside of museums and that cities themselves can become museums through augmented reality, virtual reconstructions, and location-based storytelling.

Europeana Creative is a collaboration of cultural heritage institutions and creative companies from 14 European countries. The project aims to encourage creative reuse of digital cultural content and facilitate partnerships between these sectors. It provides online labs and tools to experiment with content, develops technical infrastructure and legal frameworks, and runs challenges to fund pilot apps and services. The goals are to break down barriers to access cultural heritage materials and enable cross-sector collaboration for mutual benefit. Initial pilots include museum and education games that engage with collections in new ways. Feedback indicates the projects can positively promote destinations for tourism and reach new audiences for museums when they provide surprising and fun experiences for users.

Museum Collections on Wikipedia: Opening Up to Open Data InitiativesMuseWeb Foundation

The Web has become an important source of information, made possible by structured data. Open linked data enables ubiquitous presence as machines increasingly filter our views—via preferred search engines, the knowledge graph, or Siri—particularly of content found in Wikidata. In this paper, we identify paintings in Wikidata and analyze their usage in the English Wikipedia to find substantial impact. Our results provide evidence that publication of collections as open data facilitate an increase in views, enriched data, automatic translation, and magnified visibility. We find that the usage of paintings and views present a long-tail structure with an underrepresentation of contemporary paintings. Collaborations between museums and Wikimedia yield increased impact, yet projects are unsustainable. We propose an adjusted work-flow to accommodate for Wikimedia projects and amplify the impact of opening museum collections data.

The Allard Pierson museum in Amsterdam celebrates its 75th anniversary by showcasing new technologies that help to understand and enjoy cultural heritage in the exhibition ‘The Future for our Past’. This exhibition focuses not only on innovative ways to digitise and showcase cultural heritage, but provides a rich, visual language that is in line with the current youth culture. The exhibition shows augmented reality on mobile devices (showing for example the Forum in Rome in 320 AD), allows to walk your avatar through the ruins and reconstructions of the villa of Livia (the wive of emperor Augustus) or shows the broken statue of a pharao being transported in time to its original state. By focusing on heritage education for youngsters, the exhibition makes a firm statement on where the Future of the Past lies. Virtual 3D reconstruction processes are scientific research processes that synthesise the knowledge of different domains to come to the most probable reconstruction of a man-made structure or landscape. This means that the process needs to be formalised and documented, in different ways, for different audiences (which we do through for example blogs and 3DPDF). But it means also that virtual reconstructions needs to be re-usable, hence they should be seen by museums and heritage institutions as investments, not as costs.
