What is ATP?

ATP Stands for: Adenosine triphosphateAdenosine triphosphate

Adenosine triphosphate is a complexAdenosine triphosphate is a complex
organic chemical that participates inorganic chemical that participates in
many processes. Found in all forms ofmany processes. Found in all forms of
life, ATP is often referred to as thelife, ATP is often referred to as the
"molecular unit of currency" of"molecular unit of currency" of
intracellular energy transfer. (Wikipediaintracellular energy transfer. (Wikipedia
2017)2017)
3
What is Energy?
Energy is something that can nor be
created or destroyed. It can only be
transferred from one type of energy
to another.
 E.g. Chemical Kinetic Energy
Energy is a property of objects which
can be transferred to other objects
or converted into different forms
(Wikipedia 2016)
4
Thermodynamics
Heat Energy from
the sun goes
down on to the
grass which allow
it to grow, which
is chemical
energy.
Then the
carbohydrates
and chemicals
from the grass
get eaten and
digested by the
cow which
takes on some
of the energy
the the grass
gained.
Then the energy
from the cow gets
transferred from
the cow to the
human when the
cow is eaten.
5
What do we need energy for?
Muscular Contraction- The source of energy that
is used to power the contraction of muscles in
ATP.
The digestion of food- The nutrients in food
allows the bodies cells to operate correctly and
also allows the food to flow through the body.
Also to replace and repair broken tissue ATP is
needed.
6
Phosphocreatine
Phosphocreatine provide a quick release of
energy. It enables explosive power however it
can be only for a maximum of 12 seconds.
It is anaerobic, this means that it doesnt need
oxygen to function which is why it only lasts
for a couple of seconds.
This will be helpful for sports that arent long.
For example 100m Sprints.
7
Lactic Acid System
The lactic acid system is an anaerobic
energy system in which the high-energy
compound adenosintriphosphate (ATP)
Lactic acid is the waste product of
exercise, this causes you muscles to
stiffen up.
Lactic acid is due to exercise when
anaerobic exercise is involved.
