Floods occur when the ground becomes saturated from heavy rain and can no longer absorb water, causing the water to remain on the surface and flow into rivers and seas. Severe storms can also cause rivers to overflow their banks, spilling water onto surrounding lands and creating devastating floods. Floods are the most common and costly natural disasters, responsible for around 90% of all natural disaster damage. Proper management of runoff and absorptive ground is needed to prevent flood waters from overflowing onto property.

Alan Turing arguably wrote the first paper on formal methods 75 years ago. Since then, there have been claims and counterclaims about formal methods. Tool development has been slow but aided by Moores Law with the increasing power of computers. Although formal methods are not widespread in practical usage at a heavyweight level, their influence as crept into software engineering practice to the extent that they are no longer necessarily called formal methods in their use. In addition, in areas where safety and security are important, with the increasing use of computers in such applications, formal methods are a viable way to improve the reliability of such software-based systems. Their use in hardware where a mistake can be very costly is also important. This talk explores the journey of formal methods to the present day and speculates on future directions.

- 3. GENERAL STATEMENT Flood is usually an overflow of an expanse of water that submerges land and the inflow of tide onto land. Floods are the most frequent and costly natural hazards, causing almost 90 percent of all the damage related to natural disasters. Floods usually cause large-scale loss of human life and wide spread damage to properties. This damage is known as flood damage.
- 4. THE PROCESS o Floods occur when the ground cant hold any more rain. There is too much rain to be absorbed by the earth and the water stays on top of the earth and runs off to the rivers and seas. This is normally happens during the very heavy rain seasons. o After severe thunderstorms, monsoons, hurricanes and typhoons, the water fills up the rivers and then the rivers overflow their banks and the water comes onto the land and a flood devastates the land. Sometimes there is a blockage in the runoff and again the water overflows and goes on the land and makes a flood.
- 5. CLOSING Floods are the most frequent type of disaster worldwide. Thus, it is often difficult or impossible to obtain insurance policies which cover destruction of property due to flooding, since floods are a relatively predictable risk.
