This document summarizes a research paper that examines using small containers for coastal freight shipping in the Aegean Sea between Greece and its islands. It presents a linear programming formulation to determine optimal vessel routes and traffic flows to minimize transportation costs. Key aspects of the model include nodes for ports, links for sea routes, constraints for balancing supply/demand at each port, and an objective to minimize the sum of fuel costs and port fees. The model is applied to a pilot network of 13 Aegean islands to analyze potential cost savings from using small containers.
