Locals have discovered the natural beauty and recreational opportunities of Nathan Benderson Park, a 600-acre community park located near the border of Manatee and Sarasota counties. On weekends when no formal events are scheduled, the park is enjoyed by locals who bike, walk, fish, birdwatch, and spend time with their families around the sparkling 400-acre lake. The park has been transformed from a former borrow pit into an attractive public space with amenities like walking trails, picnic areas, and boat launches, and is frequently used by residents looking for a scenic and healthy outdoor environment.
The document discusses Newfoundland and Labrador's deep cultural connection to cod fishing over 500 years. Cod stocks dramatically declined in the 1960s and a moratorium on cod fishing was implemented in 1992. After 15 years, cod populations still had not recovered. A former biologist is now experimentally farming cod in hopes of helping coastal communities. Early results show farmed cod have thicker, firmer, whiter fillets. As global seafood demand rises, aquaculture is predicted to supply over half the world's seafood by 2030.
The document discusses WWOOF (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms), an organization that allows volunteers to work on organic farms in exchange for lodging and meals. It provides an inexpensive way for travelers to experience different cultures while learning about organic farming practices. Volunteers can choose from over 6,000 host farms in dozens of countries by obtaining a WWOOF membership. In addition to hands-on experience, volunteers gain a more affordable international experience through cultural immersion and new friendships.
Madagascar's natural resources are being depleted at an alarming rate to sustain the livelihoods of its population. Over 70% of Malagasy rely on the country's depleted forest systems for fuel, medicine and other needs. As resources diminish, many people are being forced to overexploit the land through activities like slash and burn farming, gravel extraction, deforestation for fuel and construction. This unsustainable use of land and resources threatens both the environment and people's health.
Conquest Beach in Queen Anne's County, Maryland was restored using an innovative living shoreline method to preserve the beach that was threatened by erosion into the Chester River. The project was funded through a partnership of local and state organizations. The new shoreline consists of cobblestones covered with sand and anchored by marsh grass, designed to migrate inland with rising water levels instead of being eroded. Initial estimates for restoration costs were over $1 million but the final cost was $271,473, split between the county and a conservation organization. The beach is now part of a county park open by reservation.
The document lists 20 photographs grouped into 4 categories: beautiful landscapes, native plants & wildlife, local farms & food, and youth. The photographs include images of landscapes, wildlife, farms, and children engaged in outdoor activities.
Bobcats are carnivorous mammals that live in North America. They have fur, nurse their young with milk, and mostly eat rabbits and hares. Bobcats are excellent climbers and swimmers, and have adaptations like tufts of hair on their ears to improve hearing and a stubby tail to help them balance in trees. While bobcats live in various habitats like forests, swamps, mountains and deserts, they are most commonly found in mountain forests within the understory layer of vegetation. Threats to bobcats include hunting and trapping for their fur by farmers seeking to protect livestock. Conservation efforts involve symbolic adoptions that provide funding to help protect wild bobcat populations.

The woodland caribou is a subspecies of caribou found in boreal forests and mountain regions across Canada. Several Canadian populations are listed as endangered or threatened under the Species at Risk Act. The primary threat to woodland caribou is habitat loss due to human activities such as mining, logging, and oil and gas development which have made the landscape more accessible to predators like wolves. Parks Canada is working to implement conservation actions to protect the threatened southern mountain population of woodland caribou.

This document discusses 10 American species that are in need of habitat connectivity and corridors: the spotted turtle, Florida panther, Karner blue butterfly, pallid sturgeon, lesser prairie chicken, California tiger salamander, grizzly bear, palila, eastern prairie fringed orchid, Mexican gray wolf, and Chinook salmon. Many of these species have seen their ranges drastically reduced due to habitat loss, fragmentation, dams, hunting, and other human impacts, and now occupy only a small fraction of their historic territories. Connecting habitats and establishing migration corridors could help these at-risk species recover.
This document discusses a tree planting project along Red Salmon Creek to restore the riparian zone. It notes that riparian zones are important for moderating flooding, cleaning water, providing shade and habitat. The project area was previously cleared for farming but is now protected land. Native trees will be planted to help salmon by preventing erosion, providing woody debris and shade, and creating habitat. Safety tips are provided for the tree planting. The document highlights the cultural importance of salmon to the local Nisqually Tribe and how modern development has impacted wildlife.
The document highlights 10 success stories of species that were once endangered or threatened but have rebounded due to protections and conservation efforts under the Endangered Species Act over the past 40 years. These species include the nene goose of Hawaii, American peregrine falcon, El Segundo blue butterfly, Robbins' cinquefoil plant, bald eagle, southern sea otter, humpback whale, American alligator, brown pelican, and green sea turtle. Captive breeding programs, habitat protections, reduced hunting and pollution, and international cooperation helped boost the populations of these species.
Upon arriving in the Salt Lake Valley, Brigham Young declared "This is the place!" after his sick wagon. The Mormon pioneers worked to farm the land but one year crickets threatened their harvest until seagulls, summoned by prayer, ate the crickets and saved the crops. The pioneers also discovered a hot spring that provided healing properties to those who bathed there. Brigham Young led the pioneers with a stern hand and gave chats to encourage improvement.

This document provides an introduction to conservation easements. It defines a conservation easement as a voluntary land preservation agreement where a landowner gives up certain property rights while retaining overall ownership. Conservation easements must further conservation purposes like preservation of land, habitat, or historic structures to provide a public benefit. Landowners who donate easements may be eligible for tax benefits like deductions and state tax credits. Non-profit land trusts and government agencies accept conservation easement donations to ensure the restrictions are upheld over time.

This document discusses the impacts of data center growth on Virginia's clean energy future and outlines potential solutions. Key points:
- Data center energy demand is growing exponentially in Virginia and straining the electric grid, requiring hundreds of acres of utility-scale solar per building.
- This threatens decades of land, wildlife, water, and air quality conservation efforts in the state. One data center can require 300-900 acres of solar development.
- Dominion's 2023 integrated resource plan forecasts doubling of peak electric load by 2037 due largely to data centers, and proposes billions for new gas plants and transmission lines rather than renewable energy.
- Solutions discussed include accelerating the transition to distributed and utility-scale
The document summarizes a community meeting about data centers and diesel generators in Loudoun County, Virginia. It discusses how the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality is proposing a variance to allow backup diesel generators at data centers to run more frequently, which would impact air quality and public health. The meeting covered background on regulations, health impacts of pollutants, concerns about the variance, and calls for the community to submit comments opposing the variance to DEQ and calling on elected officials and industry to take action to address the problem.
PEC's annual report summarizes their activities and accomplishments in 2020. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, PEC was able to protect over 5,000 additional acres of land through conservation easements. They also launched a successful Farm to Food Bank initiative that provided over 25,000 pounds of produce, 30,000 gallons of milk, and 11,000 pounds of meat to food insecure individuals. PEC expanded production at their community farm and farmers market to increase local food availability and support rural economies during the pandemic.
