Density
   Density= mass (g)/volume (mL)

You can compare unknown solids by 鍖nding their
densities and seeing if they are the same

Density can be measured by using a triple beam
balance to 鍖nd the mass, then if it is a geometric
shape you could use a ruler, or a graduated
    cylinder

   It is a physical characteristic
Suspension

A suspension is a type of mixture
It can be distinguished as a suspension
  because it has layers
Mixture

Matter can either be a compound or a mixture

A mixture is a physical combination

It can only be broken down physically

It can be in any ratio (no 鍖xed or uniform ratio)

No one unique set of properties
Compounds
When matter is not classi鍖ed as a mixture
  it is a compound
A compound is a chemical combination
Can only be broken down chemically
 Always in a 鍖xed ratio
All compounds have a unique set of
  properties
Boiling and Melting
          Point

The temperature at which a substance boils
  or melts
 It is a physical property
Physical Properties

 Density, Hardness, Boiling Point, Melting
  Points, Malleability,Viscosity, Conductivity
These are physical changes to a matter
Distillation
A process that separates the substances in
a solution based on boiling points
Filtration
A process that separates materials based
on the size of the particles and/or
    solubility
Evaporation
A process used to isolate a solid dissolved in liquid

   Property: Solubility

Disclaimer:You are not going to isolate a pure
sample of all components of a mixture
Chemical Properties
This is a property produces a change in the composition of the matter

Chemical properties can only be observed when the substances in a sample
of matter are changing into different substances

Three common types of evidence of a chemical property are a change in
color, production of gas, and formation of a precipitate

Two examples of chemical changes are 鍖ammability, and reactivity

The main difference between a physical change and a chemical change is that
a chemical change will change the composition of the matter and a physical
    change will not
Flammability

Flammability is a materials ability to burn in
    the presence of oxygen
Reactivity

Reactivity is the property that describes
  how readily a substance combines
  chemically with other substances
This nail has reacted with oxygen and
  water
Precipitate

A precipitate is any solid that forms and
  separates from a liquid mixture
Ex: If lemon juice or vinegar is added to
  milk
QUESTIONS

 mixture
