This document provides an introduction and overview for a keynote speech on "Games, reflexivity, and governance" given at the 3rd Vienna Games Conference. The speaker will explore how ideas of self-education (Bildung) relate to digital games, and whether Bildung and power are structurally intertwined in computer games. As an educational scientist, the speaker takes a broad view of emergent media and how socialization, learning and education are transforming through new media like digital games and virtual worlds. The speech will raise questions about these topics and issues rather than provide definitive answers.

This document summarizes Medway Council's experience using social media and podcasting for local government communication. Key results included 360-400 downloads per podcast show and over 210 social media "fans". The council learned that outreach requires a significant time investment, clear objectives, and providing valuable community engagement. While challenges remain around awareness, policies and IT support, social media can be an effective tool for councils to connect with constituents on important issues if barriers are addressed.

This document discusses using digital storytelling to integrate technology into writing lessons. It provides research showing that experiences combined with reflection, abstraction, and active testing promote deep learning. The document encourages using strategies like wikis, blogs, and digital storytelling that promote student ownership and lifelong learning. It then provides instructions and examples for using Windows Movie Maker to create digital stories that combine images, graphics, music, and sound with personal narratives.
Mobile learning in formal education or: How to train a trojan horseBenjamin J?rissen
?
Dr. Benjamin J?rissen gave a presentation on how new digital and networked media challenge the traditional linear organization of learning in schools. He argued that schools are based on a "typographic educational culture" that values linear structures to reduce complexity, but new media enable asynchronous, non-linear learning across unified spaces. While schools try to control media and learning, new technologies allow for open networks and boundaries without control. Rather than trying to train this "trojan horse", schools will need to learn how to ride it and cultivate learning in new, non-linear ways.

This document provides 10 smart tactics for developing a successful IT strategy, including setting goals and creating a vision focused on business results rather than technology fashion; understanding that IT priorities and technologies will change over time so the strategy should work for current needs and keep options open; recognizing that the full costs and wide-ranging effects of IT go beyond price; understanding potential competitive, logistical, technical, and personnel barriers; empowering leadership to overcome obstacles and achieve goals; and continually reviewing and renewing the strategy rather than allowing it to stall.

In this presentation, learn how an end-to-end smart application can be built in the AWS cloud. We will demonstrate how to use Amazon Machine Learning (Amazon ML) to create machine learning models, deploy them to production, and obtain predictions in real-time. We will then demonstrate how to build a complete smart application using Amazon ML, Amazon Kinesis, and AWS Lambda. We will walk you through the process flow and architecture, demonstrate outcomes, and then dive into the code for implementation. In this session, you will learn how to use Amazon ML as well as how to integrate Amazon ML into your applications to take advantage of predictive analysis in the cloud.
PhoneGap allows developers to build mobile apps using HTML, CSS and JavaScript instead of platform-specific languages. It uses a webview to contain the app and plugins to access native device functions like the camera. Developers can create their app logic and UI using web standards, package it with PhoneGap, and deploy it across various mobile platforms through an online compiler.
This document provides an introduction to autotools. It discusses the purpose of autotools in making code portable and easy to install. It then describes the relationships between various autotools tools like autoconf, automake, autoreconf. It provides examples of configure.in and Makefile.am files. Key sections are on generating configure scripts from configure.in, generating Makefiles from Makefile.am, and the directory structure and files involved in the build system. Usage of common autoconf macros are demonstrated.
This document discusses various aspects of Android application development including:
- The Android platform architecture which includes the Linux kernel, Android runtime, libraries, and application framework.
- The basic components that make up an Android application including activities, services, broadcast receivers, content providers, and intents.
- How to set up the development environment and build a simple "Hello World" Android app.
- Additional Android concepts like application lifecycles, permissions, and retrieving data from the internet.
