Coco the bear cub helped a baby monkey learn to walk in the forest but later got lost in an unfamiliar part of the woods. While searching for water, Coco fell into a fast-moving stream and struggled to escape, failing to pull himself to safety with grass or a vine. Exhausted, Coco was swept downstream until he was rescued from the water by a group of monkeys, including the baby monkey he had previously helped. Coco thanked the monkeys and promised his mother he would no longer wander off alone.

We held our second annual writing workshop this summer for Junior High and High School students in Chanleas Dai. The workshop was facilitated by Ream Nuon, who has recently published a few short stories of his own. During the workshop, the students studied the foundations of writing and drawing. After learning the basics of storytelling, students wrote and illustrated their own adventures. By the end of the workshop, the students had created 12 original short stories. Over the next year well be sharing all these stories with you, translated from Khmer to English, as a regular feature of our monthly newsletter.

With a background in projects spanning more than 40 years, Tim Lyons specialised in the delivery of large, complex, multi-disciplinary programmes for clients including Crossrail, Network Rail, ExxonMobil, Siemens and in patent development. His first career was in broadcasting, where he designed and built commercial radio station studios in Manchester, Cardiff and Bristol, also working as a presenter and programme producer. Tim now writes and presents extensively on matters relating to the human and neurological aspects of projects, including communication, ethics and coaching. A Cub Named Coco
- 1. Coco was a bear cub living in the forest with his mother. Coco didnt like staying at home. He wanted to hang out in the forest.
- 2. One day, while Coco was walking alone in the forest, he met a baby monkey staggering on the road.
- 3. Seeing the trouble the monkey was having, Coco helped teach the baby monkey how to walk.
- 4. Then Coco and the baby monkey went their own ways.
- 5. Coco walked deep into a quiet forest. He had never been there before. He kept walking and walking until he felt thirsty.
- 6. Then Coco saw a beautiful stream with clear water.
- 7. Because he was so thirsty, Coco rushed down the stream. In his haste, he slipped and fell into the water.
- 8. Coco felt so cold and frightened because he couldnt swim. He struggled to stay afloat.
- 9. After a while, he grabbed a bunch of grass. He tried to pull step-by-step to get himself out of water. Unfortunately, the grass slipped away and Coco fell into water again.
- 10. Immediately, he grabbed a vine nearby. Coco started to drag himself out of the river by the vine step-by-step. But the vine snapped and he fell into the water yet again.
- 11. Coco was very exhausted. The water swirled and it was difficult for Coco to breathe. Finally, the water washed Coco away.
- 12. While he was floating down the river, he saw a group of monkeys holding one anothers hands from the tree.
- 13. Coco saw the baby monkey who he taught to walk said to him, Brother, brother, please take my hand. Coco grabbed the monkeys hand and got out of the water.
- 14. After getting out of water, Coco saw his mom in the tree, too. Coco thanked the group of monkeys and apologized to his mother.
- 15. Since then, Coco has become a good cub who follows his mothers advice. Coco doesnt go walking alone anymore.
