American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the South Pacific Ocean. In 1900, the United States entered into a Treaty of Cession with Samoa to acquire Eastern Samoa, now known as American Samoa. The acquisition provided the United States with a strategic harbor at Pago Pago and a presence in the Pacific to compete with other world powers like Germany for influence in the region.
