When you see Pitigliano, it's like turning the pages of a book of fairy tales set in the Middle Ages.
The town is built on a promontory surrounded by bright green valleys, proud of its heritage: the Prehistoric period, with its tombs discovered along the city wall and in the surrounding area; the Roman period that left behind the town's name, Gens Petilia; the Medieval period of the Aldobrandeschi, lords for almost five hundred years; the Renaissance grandeur brought by the noble Roman family, the Orsini; and, after a brief Sienese interlude, the Medici and their heirs, the Lorraine who stimulated a phase of modernization.
The town is surrounded by important archaeological sites, ancient caves and primitive villages. The wine production is another good reason to visit this land. The vineyards produce prestigious white DOC wines. The olive oil as well, produced by cold pressing, has few rivals on the national and international scene.
Pitigliano is located in Grosseto province, Southern Tuscany, and is also ideally located for visiting surrounding cities and sites like Firenze, Siena, Roma, the Bolsena lake, the Amiata Mountain and the Tyrrhenian coast. Another beautiful village around Pitigliano is Sovana, but also Sorano and Saturnia with their thermae.
Situated between rocky cliffs and the beautiful aquamarine sea, this village is known to be one of the smallest in the Amalfi Coast.
It used to be the summer residence of important families of Amalfi. Part of its charm is that, it has remained almost unchanged - from the scenic beach down to the houses in Piazza Umberto I and its winding streets.

This document remembers victims of arrogance and indifference. It discusses a song about fishermen who have always come back from the sea, unlike 30 years ago when some sailed with clowns which will never happen again, not out of fear but boredom. The author prefers the authenticity of real fishermen and sailors.

archeologico della Lucania occidentale. Prima foto: il portico; seconda: veduta del giardino dal portico;
