Libraries and youth agencies in Plymouth have partnered together to provide educational and creative programs for young people. The Youth Offending Prevention Service aims to prevent youth crime through literacy programs at the local libraries. Partnerships between the library's Outreach Support Officer and youth workers have included a summer workshop series and a film project where young people created a short film about typical library sessions. Successful partnerships are built on communication, shared goals of helping young people, and flexibility.

National Literacy Trust Hubs are place-based solutions to intergenerational low literacy. Five are now operating in the UK. The Hubs harness community assets to address poverty and joblessness through campaigning, influencing and supporting literacy attitudes and behaviours. We target wards, groups and communities most at risk of low literacy.
Partnerships are key to our Hub model. The National Literacy Trust link local authorities, libraries, sporting and cultural organisations, faith and voluntary community groups, as well as businesses, health and education organisations.

The workshop will cover the following areas: recruitment and retention of young volunteers; developing a year-round young volunteer programme; things to think about: safeguarding, training and pizza!; Accreditation, including Arts Award; and the impact of a strong young volunteer scheme on the library service and on the young people involved. One of the Imaginators will also be on hand to talk about their experiences and answer any questions.

With a background in projects spanning more than 40 years, Tim Lyons specialised in the delivery of large, complex, multi-disciplinary programmes for clients including Crossrail, Network Rail, ExxonMobil, Siemens and in patent development. His first career was in broadcasting, where he designed and built commercial radio station studios in Manchester, Cardiff and Bristol, also working as a presenter and programme producer. The project took place over six weeks at HeadSpace and involved shooting a typical session in the library.
