This presentation was given during the pre-conference event on Communication for Sustainable Rural Development & Social Change, held in India on July 14, 2014 in the context of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) conference 2014. It presents the role of rural communication services to advance family farming, giving special attention to the International Year of Family Farming #IYFF14, as well as the International Forum on Communication and Community Media for Family Farming that FAO will host in October 2014.
Traditional farms and villages were largely self-sufficient, with families producing most of their own food. After industrialization, agriculture became specialized and efficient but less self-sufficient. Farms employed outside workers rather than families. Rural populations declined as people moved to cities for jobs. Cities grew enormously due to industrialization, with new urban planning models emerging like garden cities. However, cities became overly specialized and vulnerable. Now, urban farming is emerging to address issues of specialization, health, and social isolation in cities by producing food and green space and encouraging physical activity, education and teamwork among urban residents.

#5: In recent years, communication has proven to be crucial for family farmers dealing with development challenges such as new market and employment conditions, climate change and environmental degradation, growing world population and higher food demand. Successful family farming and resilient rural livelihoods are increasingly linked to:
Access to agricultural knowledge and information - timely access to up-to-date and reliable information is fundamental for farmers as they try to better understand, adapt and respond to new challenges and changing conditions.
Social learning - family farmers need communication resources and suitable channels to share experiences, learn from each other and coordinate strategies with their partners.
Engagement in policy dialogue - family farmers must participate in policy-making processes to express their concerns, articulate their demands and make their voices count.
#8: Rural communication services are sustained, two-way communication processes delivered regularly to the rural population. They are intended to enhance rural livelihoods by facilitating equitable access to knowledge and information, social inclusion in decision-making and stronger links between rural institutions and local communities.
