This document discusses water seal drainage systems used for chest tubes. It defines water seal drainage as a closed system that allows fluid and air to drain from the pleural space during exhalation but prevents return flow during inhalation. It describes the purposes, types, principles and nursing responsibilities for water seal drainage systems. The key factors that can affect drainage are proper placement and maintenance of the chest tube and drainage apparatus.
Chest tubes are plastic tubes inserted through the chest wall to drain fluid or air from the pleural space. Chest tubes connect to a drainage canister which collects the contents and maintains a water seal. Chest tubes are used after surgery, trauma, or to treat pneumothorax, hemothorax, chylothorax, or empyema. Drainage canisters come in one, two, or three bottle systems to collect and regulate drainage and suction. Nurses provide dressing changes using sterile technique and monitor patients and drainage systems for any signs of complications.
This document provides guidance on chest drain management. It discusses the purpose of an underwater sealed drain (UWSD) system, which inserts a tube into the pleural space to drain fluid or air while preventing its return through a water seal. It outlines checks to perform, including monitoring drainage and ensuring proper functioning of the UWSD unit. Complications like pneumothorax are addressed. The history of development from bottle to modern disposable box systems is also summarized.
The document discusses nursing care and management of patients with intercostal chest drains. It provides guidance on dressing, observations, positioning, potential complications and their treatment. Key points covered include using a small gauze dressing at the insertion site rather than bulky dressings, monitoring drainage amounts and lung expansion, avoiding clamping the tube which could lead to tension pneumothorax, and instructing patients to take a deep breath during drain removal.
Chest drains are used to drain fluid, air or blood from the pleural space between the lungs and chest wall. Indications include pneumothorax, pleural effusions, and trauma. Proper placement requires sterile technique and imaging guidance. Chest drainage systems use water seals and suction to remove fluid while preventing re-entry of air into the chest. Patient care involves monitoring drainage, lung re-expansion and preventing complications like infection. Tubes are typically removed once drainage decreases and lungs are fully re-expanded.
Chest tubes are inserted to drain fluid or air from the pleural space and allow the lung to re-expand; they are connected to underwater seal drainage to maintain suction and allow fluid to drain via gravity while monitoring for fluctuations, bubbles, and output; nurses must carefully monitor patients with chest tubes and the drainage systems to ensure proper functioning and prevent complications.
PowerPoint presentation on Intercostal drainage (ICD) or Chest tube drainage. In this this presentation I have included different methods by which a chest tube can be inserted to drain fluid, pus, air from the Pleural cavity. please do mail me your feedback on this presentation at tinkujoseph2010@gmail.com.

1. Pneumonia
When you have pneumonia, the air sacs in the lungs fill with infection or
mucus. Pneumonia is caused by a bacteria, virus or chemical. It is not
often passed from one person to another.
Signs of Pneumonia
Breathing faster than normal or having trouble breathing
Pain in the chest when breathing or coughing
A cough with mucus that may be yellow, green or rust colored
Fever greater than 101 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius
Shaking or chills
Sweating
Lips or nails are blue
Your Care
Your doctor will listen to your lungs. You may have a chest x-ray and a
sample of your mucus checked for bacteria or virus germs called a
sputum culture.
You may get antibiotics as pills or in an IV (intravenous). Take the
pills as directed. Take all of the medicine until it is gone even if you
feel better.
You may be given medicine to ease chest pain or coughing. Take the
medicine as directed.
Oxygen may be given as a part of your care.
You are asked to cough and deep breathe every 2 hours while awake
to remove mucus.

3. Spit any mucus you cough up into a tissue and throw it away. Do not
swallow it. Wash your hands with soap and water to get rid of germs.
Rest often.
Drink 8 or more glasses of liquids each day.
Eat a healthy diet.
Do not smoke.
Follow-up with your doctor within 7 days, even if you are feeling
better.
To limit your risk of pneumonia, get a flu shot every fall. You can get
pneumonia from the flu. Talk to your doctor about getting a pneumonia
vaccine in addition to your flu vaccine.
Protect Others from Infection
To protect others:
Stay away from people as much as possible to prevent the spread of
pneumonia.
Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol based
hand sanitizer.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or face and then touching other
surfaces. This can spread germs. Clean surfaces often to kill germs.
Wash clothing in very hot water to kill germs.
Call your doctor right away if you have:
More problems with breathing
A higher fever or your fever lasts more than 1 to 2 days
Confusion
An increase in chest pain
Nausea and vomiting
