15. Caribou Wind Project
Caribou, New Brunswick
The Caribou Wind Park represents the 2nd largest wind facility
in New Brunswick. The 99 MW wind farm represents a $200
million investment and a 20 year partnership between the
Province of New Brunswick and SUEZ Renewable Energy NA.
We worked with the Province. NB Power, and SUEZ Renewable
Energy NA throughout construction as the lead engineer for the
design of a new control building, substation, communications
system and collector system. We also completed protection
design, short circuit and coordination studies, relay setting
calculations and preparation of the electronic relay setting files
for the Utility interconnection substation.
Our work involved design of a complete substation to
interconnect with NB Power’s transmission system. This
comprised a single bay 138 kV breaker terminal, a 100 MVA
step up transformer (34.5 – 138 kV), four 34.5 kV collection
system feeder terminals, grounding transformers for collection
system, revenue class metering equipment, bus and equipment
support structures, lightning/surge protection, layout of DVAR
equipment and insulators and bus work. Also included was
protection control for the substation equipment and substation
automation and communications for the utility, wind turbine and
DVAR vendor interfaces.
The substation consists of a 138 kV transmission line, a 138
kV breaker, a 65/87/108 MVA, 13834.5 kV transformer, an 8
MVAR DVAR with four 7.5 MVAR capacitor banks system and
four 34.5 kV feeders. The 138 kV transmission line is protected
by a SEL351 overcurrent relay. The transformer is protected
by a SEL387E transformer management relay. The DVAR
bus is protected by a SEL351 overcurrent relay and the DVAR
transformer is protected by a SEL501 overcurrent relay. Each
capacitor bank is protected by a Basler Neutral Overvoltage
relay. Each 34.5 kV feeder is protected by a G&W recloser with a
SEL351R as the protection and control relay.
The 34.5kV collector system design involved underground
cabling from the base of each V90 wind turbine to a riser pole
consisting of cable terminations, fusing and a provision for
isolation. The wind turbines are interconnected by four
overhead collection feeders, optimally sized and configured
to keep the total losses within acceptable limits
