Yousuf Karsh was an Armenian-Canadian photographer born in 1908 who is renowned for revealing the inner secrets of his subjects through brief moments captured in photographs. He grew up in difficult political conditions in Turkish Armenia and immigrated to Canada at age 16, where he learned photography from his uncle and furthered his skills in Boston. In 1941, Karsh's career-defining portrait of Winston Churchill established him as one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century and it became expected for prominent figures to be photographed by Karsh.
