It is located along the outlying waters of the Gulf of Izmir, by the Aegean Sea. • Izmir yearly welcomes nearly 1,2 million foreign and nearly half a million local tourists. Coastal tourism (beaches and yacht tourism), culture and belief tourism (mainly Pergamon and Ephesus), congress tourism, winter tourism (ödemiş-bozdağ ski centers), fair tourism, thermal tourism, nature and sports tourism are the types of tourism in Izmır.
- 4. • There are a lot of places to visit in Izmır such as the clock tower at Konak square, Tepekule (first settlement of ancient Smyrna), Pagos (Kadifecastle) , roman aquaducts built on the meles river (Şirinyer), Kızlarağası hanı (Ottoman building in Kemeraltı), Hisar Mosque, the historical Kemeralti neighborhood in Konak district, Havra steet (the street gets its name from many Jewish synagogues (Havra in Turkish) built here), Beth Israel Synagogue and Anglican Church in Alsancak, Elevator (Asansör ), Alsancak and Karşıyaka districts, Izmir wildlife park, Ephesus ancient city, Pergamon ancient city, Virgin Mary House in Ephesus, the Seven Sleepers cave in Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (represented only by one inconspicuous column), the library of Celsus in Ephesus, Isa Bey Mosque, the Sanctuary of Asclepius in pergamon and the lovely village Şirince. • Izmir has a coastline of 629 km to the agean sea. The most popular beaches preffered by its visitors are Selçuk-Pamucak, Urla, Gülbahçe, Çeşme-Ilıca, Altınkum, Gümüldür, Özdere, Dikili, Çandarlı and Foça. The geographical coasts of izmir shaped by creeks and islands makes water sports possible besides the usage of the beaches.
